If you though that Helb loans which are disbursed to Students of higher instutions of learning in Kenya are meant for the poor then you are long.It has now come to everybody's notice that the very well to do in society have seized the opportunity of the ineptitude of Higher Education Loans Board to enrich themselves at the expense of the poor. This circus has been going on for years and it seems that nobody has been willing to blow the whistle on this.

This is how the rich do it.They have very high powered connections at Helb where they present their children who are schooling locally and other colleges abroad.Their children get HELB loans against all the evidence that their parents can afford to pay for their education.

This makes a big strain on Helb finances allocated by the Kenyan Goverment leading to many poor students getting less allocation of Helb loans. In return, the poor students will be forced to seek helb from their parents who in most cases cant afford to pay their children's school fees

In some cases, since poor parents cant afford to pay for their kids---many students have been reported to have dropped campus. What the shame to HELB

I SUFFERED SUCH IN THE 90S. I SURVIVED IN THE UNIVERSITY FOF 2 ACADEMIC YEARS WITHOUT REGISTRATION. I USED TO GO TO UNIVERSITY WITHOUT FARE BACK HOME. OTHER STUDENTS USED TO OFFER ME SOMEWHERE TO SLEEP. I COULD STAY FOR 3 DAYS WITHOUT FOOD. I HAD NUMEROUS DEBTS WITH FELLOW COLLEGUES. MANY TIMES THE UNIVERSITY COULD THREATEN ME WITH NO EXAMINATION CARD HENCE SUBSEQUENT FAILURE TO DO THE EXAMS. FOR TWO YEARS I PAINFULLY CAME TO ANNIVERSALLY TOWERS AND APEAL AGAINST ANOTHER APEAL AGAINST ANOTHER APEAL.......WHAT PAINED ME MOST WAS THEIR ONE TIME ANSWER THAT I COME FROM NYERI WHERE THERE IS ALOT OF MONEY FROM COFFEE, MILK, TEA AND HORTICULTURE.

I COME FROM WANG'ATA VILLAGE IN KARAMENO IN GATARAKWA IN MWEIGA IN KIENI WEST DIVISION IN NYERI, AN ARID OR SEMI-DESERT PLACE IN NYERI WHERE WE ALSO RECEIVE RELIEVE FOOD. MOST TIMES, WE WAKE UP EARLY IN THE MORNING, FORM YOUTH GROUPS AND GO FROM ONE HOME TO ANOTHER LIFTING UP COWS WHICH ARE TOO WEAK AND HUNGRY TO ARISE AND WALK ON THEIR OWN. HELB DID NOT LIFT ME UP. WE CUT GREEN LEAVES ON SHRUBS AND PUT THEM INTO DOZING OFF COWS WHICH GLADLY CHEW THE GREEN LEAVES LIKE EATING HONEY. TEA COLOURED WATER FROM GREEN DAMS IS WHAT WE USE FOR DRINKING, COOKING, WATCHING AND BATHING ONLY THE FACE AND ARMPITS ONLY. WE WAIT FOR RAINS JUST AS TRUE CHRISTIANS WAIT FOR JESUS CHRIST OF NAZARETH. MY PARENTS ARE AGED, UN EMPLOYED AND PEASANT FARMERS, ALWAYS IN OTHER PEOPLES FARMS TO PROVIDE HIRED LABOUR.

IN THE LIGHT OF THIS TESTIMONY, HELB WILL RESPOND-WE HAVE HELPED THOUSANDS OF OTHERS!-THIS IS NOT A GENUINE CASE-WE HAVE CUSTOMER CARE DESK FOR SUCH ISSUES-JUST ONE ISOLATED CASE-HUMAN IS TO ERROR-SHE MISREPRESENTED HER FACTS-WE ARE SORRY-WE PROFUSELY APOLOGISE. YET ACUTELY NEEDFUL CASES GO UNATTENDED.

WAY FORWARD-HAVE UNCORRUPTABLE HONEST FIELD OFFICERS TO GROUND TRUTH OR VERIFY SOME SPECIAL NEEDY CASES IF YOUR NAME IS HIGHER EDUCATION LOANS BOARD OR A CURSE FROM ALMIGHTY GOD HAVE BEFALLEN ON YOU. THANK YOU. I REST MY COMMENT

This is true.If you know no one there you shall not be assisted. That is very unfair and corruption shall never end.

Helb was started by people who felt that all bright kenyans should attain higher education but it is very unforturnate that the current management only emphasises on the repayment back of the loan but not how to access it.I'm an A'level vacist from Uganda who has fallen avictim of obtaining the loan after scoring 11 points on pcb/m combination.I call upon the concerned bodies to help me fulfil my dreams by attaining futher studies.

Kenya is more than 4 decades old where we need to enjoy the fruits of independence.I'm longing for futher education to become a responsible kenyan in future but all ways seem to be blocked even after gambling through hardship upto Advanced level in Uganda where I persued a combination of physics, chemistry, biology and mathematics, the subjects considered to be the hardest in the world.I'm a total orphan who lost both parents in the early 90's,it's therefore my plea to any good samaritan through any means to help me achieve mygoals through futher studies(prefferably bachelor of science in civil engineering).Contact:0720131171,somondi27@yahoo.com.

I do appreciate your work, you really help many students both needy & orphan may God sustain this organization.

I would like to ask whether any loan assigned to student is active immediately or after it has been deposited to the required account,is it possible for this amount to be changed after awarded? if not so, then it will be helpful to us if we can get letters if required especially self sponsored so that we cannot miss the Exams the way it happened to me even though I had confirmed my account which had already been awarded some money

i cleared high school in 2005, but have not been able to enroll to any college since then, My aspiration to join college seem to encouter so many obstacles since my parents cannnot afford my college fee and I have other siblings currently undertaking high school education since its considered basic in our family and I believe itsg better to have it early enough in life. I have no proper information about helb loans, so my question is, what are the terms and conditions of attaining this loans and when does one starts the repayment, is it immediately or after completion and what are the procedures of attaing it. please people help me out I realy need to fulfill my dreams

May be what is above is true may be it's just frustration from other underlaying issues but one thing is certain, there are some very corrupt, rude and illogical guys at the helb offices at Anniversary towers. All what Helb top officials are concerned with for now is writting threatening letters to the beneficiaries. I think there are better ways of demanding the repayments.

I'd like 2 express my sincere gratitude to HELB 4 assisting needy students and financing higher students. Am a 1st yr student in M.U, single parent and with 3 siblings in high sch. I was awarded ksh. 35,000 which was quite inadequate 4 my fees and upkeep. I appealed but it wasn't processed. Please help, id no. 27268863

Hi,am a student at KU.I gets loan from HELB thats 45000 per year. But this amount is too little since my parents are not employed, i have 3 siblings in high school whom look upon me for assistance in paying their school fees. You know the amount we get from HELB only goes to school fees.i usually look for vibarua like being a house boy to get money.so i urge HELB INSTITUTIONS add me and other fellows to overcome our problems.

the current problem at HELB as reported by the victims above is not just a helb problem. its a kenyan problem. we live in a "man eat man" society where the rich get richer and the poor, poorer. This situation at helb is a mere reflection of how things run in our 'great'country. its not what u know its who u know... and that is the Kenyan system for u. To victims pole kwa msiba. i'm moved by ur testimonies. helb is a loan to be paid back at interest. i dont believe anyone who qualifies should be denied. in any case its not a grant but a loan. The solution to this problem starts with ME. as a victim, think of this. U struggled through campus with 45000 helb. 2 siblings to educate through secondary school. u graduate almost as a miracle and get a well paying job at helb anniversary towers. the siblings u educated almost as a miracle finish high school qualify for campus. you are earning a good salary and can afford to educate them. Question is: would u pull a string or 2 to get them a loan?

Such sentiments are obviously true. We come from a nation where 90% of people can readily give a bribe... Only that we are fond of blaming everybody else. Very many students lie about there financial status and get away with it.

My case was totally different. HELB gave me full loan from second to fourth year. If it were not for this loan, I don't want to think where I could be now.

My ID no. is 25662739. I applied my loan in may this year and am told that my form, which I dropped personally at equity(moi avenue) cannot be traced. I have taken enough trips to both parties with no help. Only blamegame. Now I have to call off 2 semesters until I get a loan. Can somebody trace it or help?

I thank GOD for the organization since they made me step into university lecture halls. However they should listen to genuine cases of poor stundents since they entirely depend on that money.I am underway and hope they will support me to complete my course before the rich can stand against.ID NO.23539451.
