Does it work?

This is a question I am often asked and it comes from intelligent and usually switched on people. But is it real? One of the problems that hypnotherapists face is that the general public and even medical professionals don’t know what it is.

Most people only have the ideas that they have about hypnotic stuff from watching stage hypnotists on the telly or a show they went to on holiday. May be they have seen the films with Svengalli or Grigori Rasputin in them and this is there knowledge and experience around this fascinating subject.

I recently asked my doctor what he thought of hypnosis and he admitted that his knowledge was limited and he was trained in a narrow band of knowledge that concerned medicine. An honest and switched on doc.

The first question you may have to ask is what is hypnosis?

Not an easy question to answer. Look on the internet especially in the areas of brain research and you can find some amazing research. Yet when you ask researchers what it is they can give you a range of physiological and neurological symptoms.

Including the fact that when someone imagines something the same areas of the brain lights up as if the person was experiencing the event. Adds credibility to what we have always said. That you subconscious mind can’t tell the difference between what you imagine and what is real.

Most of the books I have on my collection say that it is a state of relaxation and focused awareness that by-passes the critical factor.

I went to my good friend Wikipedia and typed in hypnosis it said.

"...changes in subjective experience, alterations in perception, sensation, emotion, thought or behavior. " The hypnotic state may also facilitate change in the body: it has been successfully used as a treatment for irritable bowel syndrome,as an alternative to chemical anesthesia, and it has been studied as a way to soothe skin ailments”.

This is getting closer to my current understanding and experience as a hypnotist for close on 20 years.

It used to be thought and still is by many that this state involves you breathing deeply, being relaxed and being with your eyes closed. We still do use this type of technique however it is not how most of our clients behave all day long so may not be the most useful idea to grasp.

The first part of Wikipedia explanation says "...changes in subjective experience, alterations in perception, sensation, emotion, thought or behavior. "

So let me run a common real life situation by you and you can decide if this is like the explanation given.

Someone comes home from work and goes in to the kitchen to make a cup of tea. While they are waiting for the kettle to boil they re-run an argument they had that day at work with someone. As they go through it in their minds they begin to argue with that person again and may even change what they said in reply. As they do this they begin to feel strong emotions in their body and manage to change their state and body chemistry. So they feel angry or resentful or put down or what ever.

Yet the reality is no one is in the kitchen with them. They are on their own. They have managed to create a powerful emotional state and may even smash the mug in anger.

They have experienced changes in subjective experience.

Alterations in perception, sensation, emotion, thought or behavior.

They have also by-passed their critical factor.

Seams like they are in hypnosis yet they are not relaxed, breathing deeply or any of the old definitions of hypnosis.

It is becoming apparent that hypnosis is really how our minds work and we are in states of our created reality that may have no bases in what others can see. We create our own realities and hypnotic experiences all day long.

When someone comes to see me for a personal consultation for therapy in my practice in Leamington Spa this is one of the first things I run them through. All of them ten realise that hypnosis is real and it does work they also discover that they are doing it to themselves.

That allows them to come to the realization they they can have all the power and feelings over their lives that they could ever want. It puts the back in power it is only their desire to make their lives more pleasant that they now have to make.

Hypnosis is real and it seams to be how our mind works.

All you have to do is learn how to control your mind. Make friends with your subconscious and teach it how you will be and decide just how good you want to feel.

I have had the pleasure of Paul's help whilst going through a hard tme with my ex partner, not only did I allow what he thought to bother me it was effecting my whole health and emotional state. To cut a long story short when he tried to upset me one day I stopped him in his tracks by responding in a way he didnt expect, it was amazing in my mind I stopped him from hurting me and instead of it playing on my mind after I FELT GREAT! No rubbish I have tried it.

Thanks for this informative article. I liked your analogy about re-running an argument in your head - it is something we can all relate to!

I have found in my life that hypnosis does, indeed work. In fact, there has been significant research that points to the fact that hypnosis is effective in many areas. We just don't hear as much as we should about hypnosis - the hypnosis "industry" just doesn't have the marketing budgets that the US pharmaceutical companies have!

Thanks!
