With the recent outbreak of swine flu, many people have been asking one question: Is swine flu contagious? The answer to this question is a very simple yes. If you know someone who has been exposed to swine flu then you should avoid them at all costs. Swine flu is a contagious strain of the flu virus that is sometimes lethal.  The CDC has investigated the swine flu strain and they have determined that it is contagious, although they do not know how easily it is spread from person to person. Swine flu can be contracted by coming in contact with infected humans or infected pigs.

What can you do to prevent swine flu?

There are quite a few things that can be done to protect yourself against swine flu, although none of them will guarantee that you will not get it.

Wash Your Hands Often

One of the most important things that you can to is wash your hands. Hand washing is the easiest thing that you can do to prevent the spread of dieases, such as swine flu. Wash your hands several times a day. Make it a habit to wash your hands before eating, after using the restroom and after touching objects in a public place. Not only is hand washing good personal hygiene, it also helps to stop germs from spreading.

Carry Hand Sanitizer in your Purse or Diaper Bag

Since swine flu is very contagious it is important that we protect our babies and young children. Hand sanitizer is not a replacement for good hand washing; however it can be a great preventative measure. Carry a travel sized hand sanitizer in your purse or diaper bag and sanitize your children’s hands often. This is especially important if you are visiting places that many children frequent on a daily basis, such as playgrounds, schools or the library.

Stay Away From People Who are Sick

It can be difficult to tell if someone has swine flu until they have been tested. Many of the beginning symptoms of swine flu are similar to everyday illnesses. They include headache, fatigue, runny nose and cold like symptoms. If someone you know is ill, it is best that you stay away from them until they are feeling better.

If You Feel Ill Go to Your Doctor

It is important that if you experience any symptoms of swine flu that you see your Doctor immediately. By catching cases of swine flu early we will prevent it from spreading. If you or anyone in your family becomes I’ll you should visit your doctor and be tested for swine flu.

If you contract swine flu you should stay away from others as much as possible. Since swine flu is contagious you should be courteous and wear a mask if you need to go out in public. Wearing a mask will help keep the flu from spreading.

Taking a few preventative measures will help to protect you and your family from swine flu. Remember to be watchful if you think you or one of your children have come in contact with someone who has swine flu; however there is no reason to go to extreme measures. Just wash your hands, and if you or your children start to feel ill seek medical attention as soon as possible.
