If you purchased a first generation iTouch, you know about the prompt for upgrading your device to version 2.0. The iTunes Music Store prompted those with iTouch devices about the upgrade after its release in January 2007. At first, the upgrade was $19.99, but now, you can upgrade for $9.99 if you have not already done so. The software upgrade allows for iTunes-sanctioned applications to be installed on the device and used.

These applications are purchased, sometimes for free, via the iTunes Music Store and then transferred to the iTouch just like you would drag and drop music, videos, audio books or podcasts. Apple offers a variety of applications, including many free ones, such as ones that access MySpace and Facebook. Other applications are available for messaging, e-mail, gaming and business. While some applications cost a fee, there are many free alternatives available for those not wanting to invest in more advanced features.

While you can still jailbreak the iTouch and install third party applications, if you do not know how to do it, you may cause more harm than good. Installing third party applications and jailbreaking the device voids the manufacturer's warranty along with any other extended warranty you may have on the iTouch. The alternative to jailbreaking is to purchase the software upgrade, install Apple-approved applications and use those to ensure you do no damage to your iTouch's operating system.

When it comes down to it, the iTouch upgrade to 2.0 is definitely worth it. Apple has approved a wide range of applications that any user would find beneficial. Since there are free applications as well, you may not have to invest anything more than the upgrade price to enjoy some of your favorite web sites and games. Before making your decision, check out the types of applications available and see which ones would work for you.
