Tip 2 - Don't leave your Jack home alone too long. Dogs thrive in packs and are not happy when they are left alone. Therefore, if you will be gone for more than 8 hours in a day, you should think about obtaining a fellow canine companion for your jack, or invest in a dog sitter. A lonely pooch makes for one unhappy, anxious and destructive canine.
Tip 3 - Bathe your dog every 1 - 3 months. As soon as his coat begins to take on a yellowish tinge, you'll know it's time to give him a bath. You can take him to be groomed, or bathe him at home yourself. In addition, an important part of jack russell terrier care is to avoid bathing more frequently than once a month (unless instructed by your vet), as you will risk drying out your dogs skin which can lead to health problems.
Tip 4 - Trim nails once a month. To prevent your terrier for experiencing foot problems and other mishaps, be sure to trim their nails with dog clippers once a month.
Tip 5 - Brush coat every other day. For best jack russell terrier care coat results, groom him with a rubber curry brush every second day. This will help prevent mats, reduce shedding, and provide your dog with a glossy coat.
Tip 6 - Secure your yard and always keep your dog on a leash during walks. Jack russell terriers will dig, jump and chase after rodents. Therefore, make sure your yard has a secure high fence (at least 6 feet), never let your dog off the leash, and keep a close eye on him when he's outdoors.
Tip 7 - Familiarize yourself with your dog's habits. Finally, one of the most important types of jack russell terrier care you can provide, is to get to know your dog and his routine. Observe his behavior, reactions, temperament, eating habits, likes and dislikes. The more you know of your dog's regular routine, the faster you will be able to spot a health problem, as you will be more apt to notice odd behavior.
