Jack russell terriers love to play, and they are not particularly fussy over what games they play or what type of toys they chew and enjoy. However, although your dog may not be picky about his playthings, you should be. There are many dog toys on the market today, and while there are plenty of good ones, there are also some bad ones that could prove to be quite dangerous to your jack.
The following is a brief list of different types of toys that many jack russell terriers favor. For each toy a few basic details will be provided, which can help you recognize what is suitable for your dog, and what should be avoided.
Balls - Jacks love to chase, capture and chew on toy balls. When you walk into a pet store you will discover that balls come in a variety of sizes, colors, and textures. You will also find that they may be plain, or feature other characteristics, such as bells, squeakers, ropes, and so on. Good dog ball choices primarily include:
- Tennis balls
- Rubber or nylon balls made for dogs (I.E. Kong, Hartz, etc.)
You will want to avoid any balls smaller than tennis balls or those made from thin plastic, sponge, or any other material your dog can easily rip apart, chew and choke on. Make sure if you want toys that rattle, squeak and jingle, that they are made for dogs, and you supervise your jack russell terriers when they play with it.
Frisbee - Playing Frisbee with your jack russell can be a lot of fun for you both, as this pooch loves to run and will have a blast jumping to catch the flying disk. However, like a ball, there are different types of frisbees. The best type is one made of soft cloth or soft plastic. These disks will not travel as far as the hard plastic kind, but they are less likely to hurt your dog's mouth as the frisbee will not splinter or damage their teeth.
Plush toys - stuffed toys can be a lot of fun to rip apart, or make a great pal for your pup when he wants to snuggle up for comfort and warmth. Squeak toys found at most pet stores are fine, as long as the toy is durable, and you keep a close eye on your dog while he chews it. Avoid children's stuffed animals that have hard eyes and noses, or additional features such as yarn or string hair, as well as other decorations that can be potential chocking hazards or cause problems with the digestive system.
Last but not least, keep in mind that while Jack russell terriers do like toys, their most favorite play companion will always be you. Therefore, try to provide your jack with toys that you can enjoy playing with together.
