June 2009 Review

Bleach
written and illustrated by Tite Kubo.

I like Bleach better that Naruto. It is an action series with a good twist of drama and comedy. Imagine being able to see spirits and ghosts and being able to travel from one dimension to another just to fight with unknown spirit forces. Great. Every battle that takes place in the series won't take eight episodes or more, which doesn't make the series long and boring. The story makes you quickly place interests on the characters.

The main character of the series is Kurosaki Ichigo, a 15 year old student who have received Shinigami or Death God powers from Kuchiki Rukia, a female Death God from Soul Society. Ichigo had an ability to see ghosts and spirits that was why he was able to see Kuchiki Rukia in her Shinigami form. Due to his high spiritual power, and the powers he obtained from the female Shinigami, he was then obliged to accept Shinigami duties and kill Hollows.

Naruto
written and illustrated by Masashi Kishimoto

The story is about a 12-year-old boy named Naruto who has the Nine-Tailed fox sealed within him. Naruto fights for acknowledgement and honor of Konoha (also Konohagakure). Naruto and his friends (the other ninja aspirants) study at the Ninja Academy. After the graduation, they are all split up into three squads and declared Genin or beginner ninjas.

The other series, Naruto Shipuuden, is about the ninjas' journey as Genins or rookie ninjas. 12 years ago, a nine-tailed fox attacked Konohagakure. The 4th Hokage, Minato Namikaze, used a jutsu to store the demon inside Naruto when he was a newborn. Konoha mistreated Naruto during his childhood and treated him as if he is the demon fox himself.

One Piece
written and illustrated by Eiichirō Oda

One piece is a phenomenon. Monkey D Luffy then proves himself to be worthy of being the next pirate king despite the age and innocence. One piece is an art carefully crafted to its core and isn't based on anime brutality. It is pure Shonen action. Battles last for several episodes though but One Piece is only for those with unique taste. One Piece is about humor and originality. The anime style isn't very complex but the story is fascinating.

The story revolves around the hero Red-Haired Shanks' greatest fan, Monkey D. Luffy who sets out a journey to find the treasure of the Pirate King, Gold Roger-- One Piece. Whoever claims the One Piece will be named the new pirate king. To obtain the treasure, Luffy has to reach the end of the deadliest ocean: The Grand Line.

Luffy captains the Straw Hat pirates starting from East Blue to Grand Line. He follows the Path of the late Gold Roger. On his way to One Piece, his crew grew to have a navigator, swordsman, sniper, cook, doctor, archaeologist, musician and shipwright.

Detective Conan: Case Closed
written and illustrated by Gosho Aoyama

The story revolves around Kudou Shinichi, an exceedingly popular 11th-grader known for his investigating skills. He dreams of becoming the next Sherlock Holmes, the fictional detective he extremely idolized. Kudou Shinichi is a son of a famous novelist and a lovely actress.

When Mouri Ran, Shinichi's girlfriend, had the chance to get Shinichi on a date in an amusement park, a murder occurred, which was solved by the young detective immediately. Ran and Shinichi separated for a short while when the poisoning-Shinichi-incident* happened. But instead of poisoning Shinichi to death, the chemical relapsed him back into an elementary school boy.

After the change took place, Kudou Shinichi then takes on the name Edogawa Conan and then 'disguised' as Shinichi's cousin in order to keep the fact that he's alive from the people who poisoned him. Down the road, Edogawa Conan lived with Ran and her father, Kuogoro Mouri, a divorced detective. He met a few companions and solved numerous cases on Kuogoro's credit.

Shinichi or Conan's dramatic need in this story is the truth behind the poisoning.

Death Note
Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata

The animated version is a lot way better than the movie. The characters played by L and Ligh Yagami weren't as pleasing as the original series. But the movie was terrific, with the twists and plot reinvented. The movie effects were appealing especially how the Shinigamis were 3D-made.

Here's my personal review for the animated Death Note.

Death Note has a very inviting plot. After watching the first five episodes, you will be interested enough to continue further. Both L and Light Yagami have good intentions for the world's betterment. Yet the latter one has his wrong and evil ways. Light Yagami's greed for power was his addiction. He had his own personal goal: Live in a world where crime and sinners don't exist. Death Note is a product of creativity, indeed. The story has its own unexpected twists and turns.

Light Yagami discovered a mysterious notebook, known as "Death Note", which was owned by a Shinigami (Death God). Insructions were written in the Death Note. If a human's name is written, and the manner of death, in the notebook, the death shall then take place depending on the author's choice. Light Yagami then realized that the Death Note is real after a few experimentations and as he met Ryuk, the Shinigami who owns the notebook.

As the number of deaths dramatically increased and the obvious pattern and similar victims catches the attention of the International Police Organization, the authorities then were forced to hire L. L then learns that Kira (how the public named the secret killer) is located in Japan. L also concludes that Kira could easily kill people without having to exert effort.
