Japanese Tea Ceremony (Sado or Cha no Yu)
65Sado or Cha no Yu
The Tea Ceremony is the traditional Japanese custom of preparing and drinking tea when one has guests. It is a traditional ritual based on Taoism (Daoism). The Japanese tea ceremony is influenced by Zen Buddhism in which powdered green tea, or matcha, is ceremonially prepared by a skilled practitioner and served to a small group of guests in a tranquil setting.
Sadou is the special powdered tea; different from ordinary Japanese tea is chiefly used. Sen-N0-Rikyu, in the 16th century, brought sadou to perfection by incorporating the simple aesthetic values known as wabi (subtle taste) and sabi (elegant simplicity) and the concept that every single encounter never repeats in a lifetime (ichigo ichie). To make the encounter important, the host prepares with deep sincerity, and uses implements such as a hanging scroll or flowers in the alcove to set the setting.
Different types of Tea Ceremony:
1. Cha-no-yu (literally "hot water for tea") usually refers to either a single ceremony or ritual
2. Cha-ji or chakai (literally "tea meeting") refers to a full tea ceremony with kaiseki (a light meal), usucha (thin tea) and koicha (thick tea), lasting approximately four hours.

The study of the tea ceremony:

The study of the tea ceremony takes many years and often lasts a lifetime. Even to participate as a guest in a formal tea ceremony requires knowledge of the prescribed gestures and phrases, the proper way to take tea and sweets, and general manner in the tea room. In the tea ceremonies Japanese people wear a style of kimono called furisode, which have floor-length sleeves.
