Jobs for teenagers

Let's find out whether there are really jobs for 14 years old teenagers like. After having a small research, the answer might be different based on the country you are living.

United States

In the United States, according to the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), 14 years old children are allowed to work already, of course with specific requirements such as working hours and wages.

You are allowed to work only in non-school hours; 3 hours in a school day; 18 hours in a school week; 8 hours on a non-school day; 40 hours on a non-school week; and hours between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.

You could only receive wages less than $5 since it is stated that not less than $4.25 may be paid to employees under the age of 20 for their first 90 consecutive calendar days of employment. However many employers might give you more than that amount.

United Kingdom

If you want to work part time you must be 13 years or more. It is a matter of law and are described in children and adolescents Act. You can work before or after school, on a Saturday or during school holidays, but there are certain conditions that must be met:

  • You cannot work before 7 am or after 7pm and should take a break every four hours.
  • You can only work if there was a work permit. To obtain a permit, your application form must be signed by a parent or caregiver. Your employer then would apply for a work permit for you. The permit is designed to protect children and young people at work who are not automatically covered by things such as health and safety laws otherwise.
  • If you want a paid job in television, theater and modeling, it is necessary to obtain a performance license from the local authority.
  • There are restrictions on the types of work you can do when you are under 16 years. You cannot work in dangerous areas like construction sites or places with heavy machinery, can not drive or operate vehicles or machinery (including agricultural machinery)
  • You can not work in street trading (though some local authorities do allow children of 14 to be employed by their parents in street trading), performing abroad (without a specific license from a justice of the peace), scrap metal sales, betting shops, petrol stations, house to house charitable collections
  • During school days, you cannot work up to two hours per day, an hour before school and one hour after school.
  • On Saturday, you can work up to five hours and two hours on Sunday.
  • In the school holidays, you can work up to five hours a day, but not more than 25 hours in one week.
  • For two weeks during the school holidays, you can not work at all.

Australia

Based on the Child Employment Act 2003, there are some requirements to employ children under 16 year olds. Generally the minimum age to work is 13 year olds. The following is the summary of the regulation.

Children, including children working with parents, only allows for light work. Light work is defined as work that is not likely to harm children's health, safety or welfare or the moral and material development and is not likely to affect their ability to attend school or learning ability.

Working hours are governed by law. Children can be employed for up to three hours per day and 12 hours per week during the school year, and a maximum of six hours per day and 30 hours per week during the school holidays. These periods include time of rests.

Children may work only between the hours from 6.00 pm and 9.00 am. Children engaged in commerce in the street can not be employed between the hours from 6:00 am and 6.00pm or at dusk and dawn (depending on the season).

Children must receive a minimum break of 30 minutes to 3 hours and at least 12 hours of rest between finishing the shifts and starting the next. Employment during school hours on a school day is prohibited without a waiver.

Children working in family businesses do not need a child employment permit. This means that children do not need a permit to perform tasks related to farming on the family farm, provided that these tasks fall within the definition of light work.

Jobs for 14 year olds

Let us brainstorm the kind of jobs for 14 year olds which are suggested by many people. Maybe you have known this list but, it is still worth reading anyway.

Babysitting - All you need to have is patience and also hard work because taking care of a baby is not an easy job. Even many adults just can't do it. You have to be familiar with their cries and also become a clown for them so that they can be calm back again. Usually only girls do this job, for boys: you can skip this. You should be paid 7-8 $ an hour (directly from your neighbor because usually agencies only allow 17 years old to babysitting)

Delivering newspaper - Working as a paperboy is quite easy only if you can wake up very early in the morning. You only need to be skillful in riding your bike and to throw the newspapers right to the front doors. It is not an easy job in winter of course because the street is covered with snow. In the United Kingdom you can earn around £25-£35 ($50-$70) a week for a single round (it depends on the number of papers you deliver of course).

Pet sitting - You can only do this work if you are not afraid to animals or allergic when to be near with them. Though you will only take the pets walking around the park, you are in a danger of being bitten by them, or being infected with a virus which are coming from them. Ask your parents to post ads in the paper or make and give out flyers. You should be paid for at least $ 25 for one animal a day.

Mowing lawns - Some people don't like to work outside the house under the heat of the sunshine just to cut the grass. Mowing lawn may be an easy job but if you don't use a proper lawn mower, you may get your arms hurt. Be careful also not to cut the beautiful flowers! This job is usually done by boys and not girls. You should get paid for 20 $ for a job.

Private tutor - If you are brainy, you can offer your busy neighbors to teach their small children or even your peers! Some parents are not good enough in teaching their kids. You just need to spend an half an hour for 25$ or even more! Your neighbors will even call you more often! Just makes sure that you have done your homework. You can also join with your friends to teach younger kids than you in a group. It is surely a profitable joint venture since if one kid pays you 20$ in a month, then having 5 kids in a small group will give you $100!

Working at stores or restaurants - McDonald's (only in Australia and some other countries), Tim Hortons (Canada) may require you to be 14 and also your parents work permit. You must be able to demonstrate during the interview that you have the ability to handle difficult situations and the skill to fulfill the required position. Some kids claim that they can have 5 jobs and earn $3000 a month. Well, just ensure that your job is not against your local law.

Jobs for 13 Year Olds

The above is not a complete list of course and there are still many other jobs for 13 year olds which I haven't written down. However, I know that you read this page not only to know kinds of jobs available for teens but also to get one.

Ask around families and friends to see if they know all the job possibilities or place an ad in your local store or produce cards to deliver to your neighbors. Here are some useful links which you can visit to get a real job.

Jobs tips for teenagers

Applying for a job is not difficult though it may be frustrating also. There are some tips which you need to know before applying for a job and also when you get a job.

  • Most employers would look at your academic report so you should keep working hard at school.
  • Join in communities or clubs to socialize; this is crucial when you are applying for job because employers want you to show how best you get along with other people.
  • Be active in looking for a vacancy. Don't get stuck only with one job agency or newspaper ads. The video above is about a girl who is looking for a babysitting job - she is advertising herself through YouTube.
  • Learn something about the company first before you apply for the job - find information whether the company has good reputation or not, especially in employing teens.
  • Complete application correctly; ensure that you don't make any mistake in spelling or selecting an option.
  • During the interview, dress up normally and ask relevant and good questions. Don't hesitate to ask, it's also your right to ask during the interview.
  • If you are accepted for the job, always show a good attitude: be on time, be friendly with other workers, and do your best!

There are not many jobs for 14 years old but if you are creative, surely you can find one. It can be selling candies to your friends at school, or even uploading your images on your blog and sell it for a dollar! Be smart, be creative, then you can earn decent money.

It is also not easy to find a job so once you get one, do your work very well. Also be careful when you are looking for a job, there are some fake companies which might put you into trouble, especially with the offer which does not make sense.
