Keywords Definition

"Knowing how to get the right keywords could mean the difference between $uccess and failure in your online business.

Keywords mean everything in Internet marketing. They are key ingredients quietly contained in successful websites, articles, and yes hubs! Keywords are simply words & phrases that people use to search with at search engines like Google, Yahoo & MSN.

For example: If you were searching for shoes, what words or phrases would you most likely enter at the search engines?...

Maybe you'd enter shoes, gym shoes, dress shoes, athletic shoes, bowling shoes, etc...

You see how these keywords can vary?

They will all conjure up slightly different targeted results at the search engines giving surfers various targeted results to explore. If you were in the shoe business you'd definitely want to be listed on the first or at least the second page of search results now wouldn't you? Most definitely!-)

How to get the Right Keywords

It's all about supply and demand.  Simply put, as a general rule your Demand (number of people searching using a particular keyword) should be greater than your Supply (number of pages containing that keyword).  This insures that you will have less competition as possible for your chosen keyword.  Follow this basic rule and it can take you a long way.

You will develop a keener eye and more advanced techniques as you gain more keyword experience.

Keyword Optimization & Placement

Some key places to position your keywords for best results are in headlines, sub-headings, text links, metatags, and scattered throughout your content. These are ‘bait areas' that search engine spiders gravitate toward. Proper keywords and placement will let them clearly identify what your webpage is all about. It is important not to overuse keywords, but rather, use them often while still enabling your content to read well. Too many repetitive keywords could be viewed upon by the search engines as keyword stuffing.

Good Keywords = Free Traffic!

There's not an Internet Marketer in world who wouldn't LOVE more Free 'Targeted' Traffic!-) That is what taking the time to do a little keyword research can generate you. Fact is that most Internet marketers neglect keyword research so they end up working harder - not smarter. Not to mention they have to invariably kick out more money for paid advertising. But if they took the time to do some basic keyword research, they could have saved themselves hundreds, even THOUSANDS in the long run. I was once one of those people but now I know better. I never write anything without doing at least some basic keyword research first. Afterall, the greatest writings in the world mean nothing without a steady flow of traffic.

Special Note to Hubbers

If the Google Adsense ads appearing on your page are UNrelated to your hub topic, then this is a sure sign that you are in desparate need of some good ol' keyword research. When you first publish your hub, ads usually don't match initially. But after about 24hrs maybe less, you should begin to see ads that are directly (or at least closely-related) to your topic. If not, you need to seriously undergo some keyword research -- that is IF you want to increase your earnings.

Thanks for your advice on keywords. You mentioned a few sites that I was not aware of. You know how you have a habit of doing the same thing everytime. I will probably try using different sites next time and analyzing a little more for better results.
