The evolution of the kitchen cupboard and storage

Living with a growing family we never seem to have enough kitchen cupboard space. I am still baffled at why builders and home owners who built these homes would ever skimp on the space to store your utensils along with the appliances you only use periodically. You typically find the older homes have larger areas for storage such as a kitchen pantry so cupboard space was not a highly valued piece of real-estate when buying a home as long as it had a pantry. However, in the mid 40’s when a boom in housing created new designs and scaled down the size of the kitchen because families were not as big as they used to be; they made smaller kitchens and cupboard space. This is expected when you move from a typical family size of 3 to a family size of 5. At one time there used to be a need for large families to help keep the farm operational. However, during the turn of the century people moved to the city and began working in the factories and parents no longer needed a large family to help keep the farm going. In the natural order of things meant there was a demand for smaller living space, smaller living area and of course smaller cupboard space.

History repeats itself in the evolution of the kitchen

Statistics have shown that the 1st generation of baby boomer kids are having larger families and are requiring more space. It is also  shown that boomers are have been remodeling their homes to allow for upgrades and they have made the kitchen a place for entertainment in the way they include kitchen islands with their granite counter tops and high tech stove top appliances while making the kitchen another addition as a place of entertainment. Wood is typically the most common material in making a kitchen cupboard but the quality of the wood varies depending on the age and manufacture and if the family opted for the factory premade edition. With the evolution of the kitchen and generation X rebellion to the latchkey syndrome there is more demand for family time and dining within the home. In order to accomplish this in a relaxed atmosphere you need a place to live comfortably and to dine comfortably. The generation that is having more kids and having one parent at home is creating a market demand for architecture and products that require either a kitchen pantry or a larger kitchen with more cupboard space. If you have the option for more cupboard space or less always go for more. The benefits are later down the road someone can remodel the kitchen design by installing smaller kitchen cabinets or moving some of your space to other areas of the home by making the kitchen smaller and another room larger.
