Kitchen Doors: Three Ways to Save Money

Everyone’s kitchen can start to look pretty dingy after a while, no matter how good a housekeeper you are.  Every time you cook, you create at least a small mess, including grease, crumbs, and stains.  Then there are the kids and spouse looking for snacks, the pets underfoot, and so on.  Sooner or later, all of the surfaces, from the floor to the cabinets, start to show the wear.

One way to perk up the kitchen, though, is with new cabinets.  Sure, you say, but where is the money going to come from?  Well, the good news is that you don’t have to spend a lot.  There are several ways you can make those old cabinets look like new, and it all focuses on the doors.  You can actually replace just the doors or paint them yourself.  Even just replacing the handles can have a surprisingly good effect on the appearance of the room.  Let’s look at these options in more detail.

Replacement Kitchen Cabinet Doors

Replacing your kitchen cabinet doors may seem like it would be out of reach financially, but that isn’t necessarily true.  One good way to save on them is to order direct from the factory.  A quick web search should reveal several choices for this.

When selecting the doors themselves, don’t forget to keep the color and pattern of your current cabinets in mind.  Brand new doors won’t help at all of they don’t go with the rest of the room’s décor.  In most cases, a simple, neutral shade with a minimalist pattern is best, but this is entirely up to you and your tastes.

Laminate is an excellent material to consider when shopping for replacement kitchen doors.  They are durable, easy to clean, and don’t require painting.  They are also often among the most affordable options.

Paint and Save

Another way to freshen up your kitchen cabinets is by painting the doors.  This is not an overly big job, but will require some patience.  Once again, the color selection and type of paint will be important.  You will want to make sure it will be something that can be wiped clean when the inevitable messes occur.

If the idea of saving money by painting the kitchen cupboard doors appeals to you, a visit to your neighborhood library is a great idea.  There are dozens of books available that will walk you through how to do this step by step.  The folks at your local home improvement store can also be a great source of help and advice.

Get a Better Handle on Things

Finally, simply changing the kitchen door handles can have a significant impact on your kitchen.  If you have those nondescript round plastic knobs, or maybe no handles at all, picking one that suits your personal style can add a nice little touch to drab, tired-looking cabinets.  Best of all, this is probably the cheapest way of all to go.

Your (Almost) New Kitchen

Of course, you may want to consider replacing or painting the cabinets and adding new hardware.  A little effort can go a long way.  Don't forget, those kitchen doors are at eye level, so they make the biggest impact on that room's appearance.

So, whether you are ready to spend a moderate some of money on new cabinet doors, a fair amount less on paint and elbow grease, or just a few dollars on some new handles, there is clearly no reason why you cannot spruce up the look of your kitchen.  There are definitely options available for every budget.
