63
If you have ever injured your Knee, you know that it adds a new dimension to the meaning of pain. Because of the nature and depth of Knee pain, anyone with this type of injury will look for relief immediately. The most common method used by orthopedic surgeons for Knee injuries is known as R.I.C.E.
The R.I.C.E. Method for Knee Pain
R.I.C.E. stands for...
- Rest - rest your knee. Stay off of it or use crutches if you absolutely must move around
- Ice - Use cold packs or ice packs to help control swelling by slowing down the blood flow
- Compress - Use compression or ACE bandages applied snugly but not to tight
- Elevate - Keep your Knee elevated. By doing this you will notice there is less pain
When you have a knee injury you need to take care of it immediately. Use of the method above can help stabilize your knee and prevent further injury until you can see your Doctor. Always seek and follow your Doctors advice.
Injuries That Cause Knee Pain and How They are Treated
Here are some common injuries that cause knee pain with a short description of what to expect for their treatment.
- Chondromalacia - often treated with low impact exercises such as swimming, cycling and walking. If conditions are severe enough, arthroscopic surgery may be used
- Torn Meniscus - minor tears could be treated with physical therapy. More extensive tears will likely require surgery to either repair or remove part of the meniscus
- Osteoarthritis - aspirin or acetaminophen for pain and ibuprophen for inflammation is common along with exercises to strengthen the knee
- Knee Tendons - The R.I.C.E. method along with ibuprophen to relieve pain and inflammation and topical creams to help with knee pain relief. A ruptured tendon may require surgery to reattach
These descriptions are not meant as medical advice, your Doctor is your definitive source for treatment and advice.
