Labradoodles are a cross between the Labrador and the Standard Poodle. They come in many different colours including
- cream
- Chalk
- chocolate
- Cafe
- black
- silver
- apricot
.They where first bred in the 1970's and weigh anything from 30 - 90 lbs and stand about 12 - 21 inches high. The Labradoodle has a coat that is curly and woolly having many of the characteristics of the the Labrador. One major advantage of this breed is it should not shed much hair. If you live with a Bernese mountain dog like I do that's a BIG advantage I can tell you!
The Labradoodle was bred as a companion dog and its excellent temperament makes it an ideal choice for a family dog. As always do your own research before you purchase any dog, talk to the breeder, see the puppies parents and check their temperament. As any breed becomes popular their are always people who will exploit it turning out poor and badly socialised specimens.
The Labradoodle is an intelligent, sociable, friendly, non aggressive and energetic dog. Because his coat is non allergic most allergy sufferers can tolerate them (best to check with breeder as not all Labradoodles have this quality).
If you wish to own a Labradoodle please take the following points into account.
- Always buy from a reputable breeder
- Nevr buy a dog from a puppy farm or pet-shop
- Ensure you see both parents and check for temperamentCheck for these Labradoodle genetic disorders elbow dysplasia, Hip dysplacia (HD), Hypothyroidism and Retinol atrophy
- Can you afford to keep you puppy, consider the lifetime cost including purchase, feeding, training, food, vets bills, kennel fees (while your on holiday) and insurance.
- Have you a suitable home for your puppy - Is it big enough, can you exercise your dog nearby
- Do you have time to look after your dog - Training, grooming, daily care and exercising
- Remember your Labradoodle might live 10-15 years have you the commitment to stay loyal to your pet for that length of time?
Their is no finer companion than a dog. They are loyal, trustworthy and will become your best friend. But before you purchase a puppy really think carefully about your circumstances. Do you work all day, can you afford it, can you find the time to house train and socialise your puppy? If you can then go ahead buy your puppy, you won't regret it!
All the best and good luck with your new puppy,
Laura

These dogs were originally bred to work as seeing eye dogs for the blind, so they have a great temperament. Good Hub!
Good to see you haev accurate information on these wonderful dogs, because too many places do not. Particularly good is your info on buying from a reputable breeder and never buying from a puppy mill. Nice hub.
Our Labradoddle appears to have an ear infection. His Vet is only in 1/2 day on Wed. Does anyone have any suggestion how to remove the hair from the ear?
