ladies with an attitude: the top 10 fashion and style icons ever!
76This group of women defined for their generation what fashion and style is all about. Every single one of them, at some point, had dictated what is fashionable or stylish, for better or worse. Sure, they may have had other hands help them in setting trends, but what makes them iconic and different from the rest of the stylish set is their universal appeal that crosses borders and transcends time.
Coco Chanel
Arguably the most famous designer there ever was, her silhouette and streamlined elegance put the C in classic. Modernist fashion sensibility is entirely owed to her as is the birth of haute couture.
Edith Head
Unlike Chanel, Head's true fashion was not usually seen on her. But let it be known that the fashion statements she made via movies like Sunset Boulevard and Roman Holiday are entirely her own. And she's got 8 Oscar awards to prove it.
Jackie Kennedy Onassis
Her classic suits and A-line dresses matched with pillbox hats are her legacies to the fashion world. And oh, those shades, too!
Audrey Hepburn
Her fashion does not begin and end with Breakfast at Tiffany's although this movie did introduce "the little black dress" to the world. You can also catch her at her glamorous best in Paris When It Sizzles where she played a model.
Twiggy
She was the poster girl of the British high fashion mod look and single-handedly transformed androgyny from being a subcultural concept to mainstream awareness. Who could forget those jutting hips, short hair and fake eyelashes?
The Supermodels
They were undoubtebly the queens of major fashion spreads and runways from New York to Paris during the 80s and 90s and their collectve power even extended to the consumerist realm. But individually, they were known by their first names: Cindy, Naomi, Linda...
Princess Diana
She may be the crown jewel of the house of fashion but really, more than the hair and the gowns, the image bespeaks of eloquence and class personified.
Madonna
The mother of all reinvention and re-imagination, hers is at once fashion forward and bordering on scandalous. But whatever the decade, a Madonna signature look is always defnitive. Her next stop? As the image of Louis Vuitton's 2009 Spring collection.
Nicole Kidman
The undisputed queen of the red carpet, her Oscar night appearances have been the benchmark by which other celebrities are judged. Long limbed and ever chic, she is fashion at its radiant best.
Sarah Jessica Parker
If today's fashion had a bible, she'd be on the cover. Her fashion, as gloriously displayed in Sex in the City, has been described from quirky to streetsmart, from eccentric to accessible. But whatever it truly is, one thing's certain - it's influential.

Well now you know! Thanks for dropping by :D
Hi Cris, I know all of them and I thought you were describing me as Sarah Jessica Parker. L.O.L just kidding dude.
if that is so, then you are one good fashion influence to the people around you! now walk the walk! :D
Out of all of them, Jackie O is the runaway winner I think, with the sunglasses and the tailored suits. We have even coined an expression about her "Very Jacikie O!"
yep she was a woman of style, and substance of course :D
Coco Chanel, Edith Head, Jackie O, Diana - you have chosen well, Cris! What a lineup! Ladies Who Lunch still wear some version of Chanel's trademark suit, but no matter the vintage, it never looks out of date.
thanks! btw, Ladies Who Lunch sounds like a scary bunch! LOL and what would your style be? your avatar suggests a throwback to the rRomance of the Elizabethan era (or is it Victorian?) :D
Obviously you haven't read my hub on Armchair Travel To England! Owing to my mostly English blood, I *am* a throwback. (Jane Austen rocks!) But from "Serendipity In The Tall Corn", you know I'm not all and lace. So you won't be surprised that for several years, I was a roadie for a country-rock band. If you read my blog Saturday's Child, you'll see a whole other side. My motto being 'Life is only a necklace of experiences strung together' (or something like that). I don't plan to go quietly into the night, but arrive at the Great Beyond yelling "Whew! What a ride!".
As for Ladies Who Lunch, that's a term to describe well-off women who have nothing to do but shop and impress one another over long lunches at "the club". Hence 'ladies who lunch", not "ladies who *have* lunch". For the latter, it's only a meal; for the former, a production. As in the difference between a mid-afternoon coffee break, and High Tea at the Ritz (where it's a safe bet someone will be wearing a Chanel!). =D
Jane Austen is hot! I'm a big fan of all those mannered Ivory Merchant-like productions! So the avatar is just the tip of the iceberg, guess I have to head on back to your hubs to get a more complete appreciation!
Okay, got a better picture of the Ladies Who Lunch, who wear Chanel! LOL :D
Great selection, muy bien done! The photos are very well chosen too! Kudos!
Gracias Elena :D
