67Find your perfect vintage at a perfect price
If you're looking for the perfect bottle of wine to surprise your girlfriend with or woo your date with at that cute little BYO restaurant, these places are tops for finding great vintages at friendly prices.
If you're looking for charm in your wine shop, Que Syrah is oozing with it. Located at 3726 N Southport, walking into Que Syrah is like walking into a 200-year old cellar. Barrels on the floor old wood all around, the store carries everything from a French Grenache/Syrah/Cinsault blend for a mere $10 to a 1991 California Brut for $65.
This place is also the perfect place to shop for the wine connoisseur in your life. The staff prides itself on knowing its inventory (every employee has personally tasted each wine!) and keeping their shelves stocked with new and interesting varieties. But don't be intimidated if you're a novice either! The store hosts a complimentary tasting on the first Saturday of each month from 3-7pm to help you familiarize yourself. And as if the place couldn't get any better, they offer a loyalty program to customers as well! After 10 purchases at Que Syrah, you earn 10% off everything FOR LIFE! Now that is a deal!
As a Chicago-area chain, Binny's Beverage Depot brings something unique to the Lakeview area. At Binny's, you can pick up wine for the party hostess, as well as some imported Belgian brew for the host. Or, if you are the host, you can buy your favorite vintages by the case! Binny's offers an extensive selection of wines, as well as brews, both popular and unheard of, from all over the world. The store carries everything from Yellow Tail selections for $6-$8 to a 1987 Opus One Napa Cabernet for $2,475 a bottle.
This location even has a walk-in humidor and a gourmet food shop, making it the perfect place to throw a gift together for your buddy, or pick up some things to whip up your own wine and cheese tasting. Stop by 3000 N Clark to check out the amazing offerings at this wine, beer and spirits warehouse.
Kafka Wine Co. is the IKEA of wine stores. Clean lines and bright lights allow the wine selections to be center stage. And they tout the fact that 90% of their selections (over 250) are under $15. The goal at Kafka is to make your wine experience fun, easy, and un-intimidating. Additionally, Kafka offers a First Friday event on, you guessed it, the first Friday of each month from 7-9pm. For $15 you can taste the varietals of a specific region/country. So on the first Friday of next month, head over to Kafka, located at 3325 N Halsted, with some friends and start the night off right!
Valhalla Wine Shop isn't a typical wine shop. Stark and simplistic, the store's offerings sit on two large wooden tables in the center of the store. However, the selection is varied, and the store clerks are more than helpful. There are also always a few bottles open on the table to try. The best part about this shop is its proximity to various BYOB restaurants on Broadway. So if you are doing dinner on the cheap in Lakeview, pay a visit to Valhalla, at 3317 N Broadway.
