land of the midnight sun
61Finland
I have now lived here in Helsinki for nearly ten years, although i speak very little of the language. Being a native English speaker, it tends to make you very lazy to learn a different language, but over here you have no problems cause most Finns speak English very well.
Helsinki is a fantastic city and compared to many cities throughout the world it is very safe. Especially for women of a night time. There is plenty of good restaurants and night life and as it is now summer time there are plenty of open air festivals and the sun does not set all you get at midnight is twilight, so if you feel inclined to do so you could party all night in one of the many parks, the best one being kaivopuisto. Now this Park has an observatory on the hill and you have stunning sea views.
There are many beautiful churches and museums to go and visit and lots of open markets and flea markets. The public transport is fantastic, Trams trains and buses are always on time and you can get this Helsinki card which gives you unlimited travel on all three means of transport.
Moving away from Helsinki one January i decided to take a 13hour train journey North to the beautiful town of Rovaniemi which is on the Arctic circle. The temp when i left Helsinki was about plus one degrees Celsius and when i got to Rovaniemi,it was -25 degrees Celsius and that makes certain parts of the male anatomy disappear.
The journey was comfortable in one of the sleeping cars and i ended up staying in the hotel Santa clause. The town is well known for the Santa clause experience theme park. But i like the thing where you can go into any post office in Finland fill in this form.post it to Santa land with all the child's details and the will then send a letter from Santa just in time for Xmas.
For the fishermen among us Finland has a lot to offer. Lots of lakes and rivers, ice fishing and with the baltic sea being less salty than most seas you get pike, zander, perch and bream.
You cannot buy wines and strong alcohol in supermarkets over here. They only sell it in the state owned Alko shops, which is strange but different countries different ways of doing things .
Anyway i hope you have liked this short insight into Finland, its well worth a visit.
A TRIBUTE TO THE GREAT MAN WHO WE ALL MISS VERY MUCH

Great introduction to Finland and loved the photos. Please write more about your experiences there. Thanks.
Visiting the land of the midnight sun has always been in my wish list. I'd really like to visit it someday and just see for myself the sun at midnight.
Thank you for the beautiful pictures. I like the 'northern lights' photo best.

wow! nice picture collection !hope to visit this wonder land someday.
I used to teach geography which included Finland. It's great to have first hand information from someone who is actually there. I wish I was too. Great photos...great writing...I love this hub.
The northern lights photo is spectacular. I have heard of this but never imagined it would be so vivid.
A nice hub with powerful title. I would really like to see the northern lights myself someday.thank you for sharing.
I watched an excellent BBC documentary with Joanna Lumley traveling through Finland in search of the Northern Lights. Just the other day I watched it. I was bowled over by how beautiful Finland is and I now have a very strong desire to visit. My kids want to go to an ice hotel - but I am not sure I would like to sleep in there! Lovely hub. Thanks
wow, you lucky thing! I have always wanted to see the northern lights, i think it is fantastic. And i think the bit about alcohol only being sold in special shops is one of the reason that it is so safe to walk about at night! England take note! loved it. Lol Nell
It was nice to hear about another Arctic community. Thank you

I have always wanted to see Finland. An acquaintance of mine was Finnish and fed me smoked oysters at a Thanksgiving dinner in Seattle! Cheers from your new fan!
