A Brief Backstory About My Nightmares

I dream a lot, probably a lot more than the average person. Of all the dreams I've had, I'd say at least 80% of them are either nightmares or night terrors. Sometimes the music that I listen to when I fall asleep induces these nightmares, but there have been times when I had them even without listening to music.

I guess my nightmares are a reflection of me. Most of them are wildy random, incorporating people from the past that I haven't thought about in years. A few of them foreshadow events that happen further down the road (a sort of horrific deja vu), or just visions that never actually occur, but seem realistic enough.

I used to record my nightmares on my computer. This continued until I had to format it, and inadvertedly forget to backup those files. So I stopped writing them down, and actually started anticipating these subconscious experiences every night. These nightmares became a guilty pleasure of mine.

The Land of Nod (In My Nightmares)

One of my most eccentric nightmares also happened to be my most recent one. It was about this television show called "The Land of Nod." It was kind of like Tales From the Crypt, but the segments where legitimately horrifying. Maybe it was because the production value of the show was horrible, but not the kind of laughable horrible that is easily brushed off. It was just so eerie how poorly done the show was. If you've ever seen The Neverending Story, picture that type of video quality, but just overtly dark and brooding and you've got the image I had in my nightmare.

As vividly as I can remember how everything looked, I can only remember three key scenes from the entire experience. One involved a sort of swooping / track camera shot of a boy wearing a red varsity jacket riding a bicycle down a neighboorhood through unnaturally heavy fog. I think he was trying to escape from something, but I can't remember more.

The other scene actually involved me being in the television show! I was on the top floor of a dimly light house, and a faint blue light was creeping in from a window facing a stairwell. I was walking toward the stairwell, with the intention of descending it. Then all of a sudden, a poorly rendered, yellow CGI skeleton appeared behind me and bit a chunk of my flesh from my neck! When I say poorly renderd, I mean Army of Darkness quality.

The final part about my nightmare that I remember was a voiceover, and it also involved the scene with the boy on the bicylce. Someone was narrarating "Next time, In The Land of Nod," in a deep narratative voice. I guess it was a preview from the next episode or something.

This particular excerpt from my nightmares was hauntingly vivid. I remembered so much about this nightmare, like it was from a show I saw once when I was younger, that just unexpectedly resurfaced now.

The scary thing is, this "Land of Nod" show, never existed!

The Land of Nod (In Reality)

I was so convinced that the "Land of Nod" from my nightmares was a real show that I ran a search for it when I woke up the next morning. To my dismay, I could not find any evidence of a horror show called The Land of Nod. This was where I started to really get creeped out. My imagination is good, but not good enough to create an entirely believable television show out of thin air!

The Land of Nod that I did find was the Biblical place where Cain was forced to dwell after killing his brother, Able. I had never heard of this location before in my life, not even in church where it would be a relevant subject. I've heard of the word Nod before; it was used in one of the Command and Conquer games as the name of the opposing force. But that was almost a decade ago!

I know nightmares often have meanings within them, but I can't for the life of me decipher what this one is. Maybe it's inspiration for me to create such a show in real life? Maybe it's an omonous warning about something that will happen in my future?

Or maybe I'm just bugging out...

I just might do that. It's a little strange drawing inspiration from nightmares, but who knows? Could be promising.

Some say that dreams are just dreams, but sometimes I am totally creeped by them and other times I just frown, thinking "shit, that was bizarre".

As for interpretation, I would be inclined to take what you find with a pinch of salt. The book I read on the subject tended to be very Freudian-based, so everything was apparently to do with sex or my mother - or sex with my mother, which was scary to say the least.

My theory is that dreams are the product of the day's brainwork being downloaded from short-term to long-term memory.

How one's brain does things in the subconscious could be why the dreamscape is surreal. Perhaps the flashes of images and sounds the brain produces as it processes and files away the day's events mix with other sounds and images it associates them with, producing a patchwork of what our conscious mind sees as disjointed.

Basically, it's probably just the filing mechanism in the brain, which, like fingerprints, will be unique for each and every one of us and trying to see rhyme or reason, could actually be a waste of time.

I think dreams for the most part are just that - dreams, however in certain cases, they can be portents, glimpses of the future, but in my experience, they are just dreams.

Good luck though and I hope you get to the bottom of it.

it may mean something but it can also mean nothing, Larry. dreams are sometimes mixtures of what we feel, what we like, what we envision, what we aspire...

@Nick B: That has to be the case, because there are people appearing in my dreams and nightmares that I haven't talked to in years.

@psychicdog.net: You can always count on Bob Marley to break it down, lol.

@bingskee: It's usually a toss up for me. Some of my dreams / nightmares are pretty deep in meaning. And no hard feelings, lol.
