Large Wall Clocks Deserve Respect

The tradition of the large wall clock built on the side of a wall, mountain or even city tower can be taken indoors - inside your home.  These clocks make quite a statement and should therefore be used with attention to detail.  The sheer size of these clocks will take your eye away from other details and make this the focal point of any room.  You should keep this in mind as you choose your other room decor choices.  Because wall clocks decor is really about personal taste, there are no hard and fast rules regarding size.  However, some precautions or notes should be mentioned.

First of all, the size of a clock that we would call 'large' is relative but can vary from roughly 24 inches to 48 inches in diameter.  Yes, that is 2-4 feet in diameter.  Hanging wall clocks of this size can be dangerous, especially if it is a solid wood or metal wall clock. You should always make sure to mount into a stud on your wall.  Better yet, have a professional install the clock for you.  Nothing could be worse than having the fear of this big clock come crashing down on you in some elegant dinner party.

Another point to consider  is that your walls should really be large enough to allow for such a clock to fit nicely and look proportionately matched.  Every wall has space for a 2-4 foot round circle, but not necessarily in proportion to the rest of your space.  Sure, you could hang one in your bathroom, but it would probably look completely unmatched and it would be a waste of the statement.  So, consider usign such a larger clock in rooms with cathedral or vaulted ceilings.  These types of rooms lend themselves nicely to using this sort of larger wall clock.

Contemporary Wall Clocks

What type of style are you looking for in your wall clocks decor?  Are you more interested in the look of older metal clocks or do you prefer wood in your time piece selection.  There is a revival of all things modern these days.  The styles from the 1950s are still persuading patio and even some indoor fashions.  Likewise, some art and styles of home decor from the 1970s are even making a comeback.  And so it is with these styles of clocks.

Hanging wall clocks come in a variety of classical and contemporary looks.  The old wood wall clocks with their cases, pendulums or even a good old cuckoo clock are ever popular.  If it happens to be in your home, you may quickly tire when the hands hit the hour - might drive you cuckoo.  But, other than this, both wood and metal wall clocks have stylings for most tastes. The picture above is more of a vintage look with the sunburst pattern.  This particular clock is composed of both wood and metal as you can tell.  Most wall clocks from the 1800s and early 1900s are usually small wood cases that hung on a wall.  The face had a key hole where you would wind it up to keep time for several days.  Then, when the springs had 'sprung', you would simply open the glass door covering the face, wind it up and you were good for another few days.

Old Looking New Large Wall Clocks

Didn't mean to confuse you with the title there. All I was trying to get across was that there are large ones made today that are supposed to look antique wall clocks - you know, aged and worn. It is similar to how we buy jeans that are faded, cut up and worn but are actually brand new and have never touched another pair of legs.

Wall clocks have this same type of charm. For whatever reason, we like it when our products have an aged and used look. I think it must have somethign to do with the fact that these things feel appreciated and trusted. It's like we know that other people have relied on them for years. Now, we don't consciously think about this, I'm not suggesting that. It is more like some type of inborn trust or appreciation we have for antique items. In this case, the older items just happened to be these unique wall clocks.  This is not meant to be a jab against these newer clocks.  And, in fact, for most applications these are the preferred way to go.  However, if you just have to have the history built into your clock, you will find that there are unique styles with those vintage looks.
