How to Overcome Layoff Anxiety and Depression
75Layoff Anxiety and Depression
The fear of losing a job can cause stress and anxiety; and being laid-off can actually cause depression among many people who lost their jobs. Lay-off anxiety occurs as a result of fear of the unknown, the uncertainty of the future, and fear for the survival of the family that makes this event a major crisis for them especially for breadwinners of the family. Depression is also common among people who lost their jobs due to lay-off because of change in career, change in environment, and change in lifestyle.
The Stages of Grieving on Losing a Job
People affected by lay-off, or those who are about to lose their jobs, usually undergoes a grieving process. The first stage starts with shock; being upset of the sudden turn of events in their life; and the unexpected incident where one is unprepared to happen. Under this circumstance, the affected person is in a state of disbelief leading to the second stage of grieving which is denial. Denial comes as a refusal to admit to the truth and disagreement to the judgment of the management on their actions and choices. Usually, concerned person keep on asking “why?” to himself. Why did this happen to me; why me; what did I do wrong to deserve this; why? This is the stage where the person felt being rejected by the company, by the management, and by his superiors.
Consequently, this lead to anger which is the next grieving process of being laid-off; anger is a defense mechanism, a reaction to the feeling of being rejected by the company. This anger may be directed to the persons involved in the decision making, or it may be directed to the employer or the company itself. Once anger is neutralized or finally overcome, the person will then try to negotiate for reconsideration; this is called the bargaining stage. However, this is only applicable to situations where only selected people are being laid off. Although, most often this stage is part of denial to the truth that management decisions are usually final.
Once every effort to negotiate for reconsideration proved unsuccessful, depression sets in as the concerned person finally realized the truth of losing a job. Lay-off depression occurs as a result of loss of job, loss of income and compensation, loss of benefits, and change in lifestyle. Depression is just part of the grieving process and it may be short for those people who are proactive to the situation, but this may stay longer for those reactive to the incident of losing their job.
When lay-off depression is successfully overcome, the affected person will finally learn to accept all the events that happened in his life; and he is in a state of acceptance where he starts to look forward to the future by looking for alternatives, apply for other jobs and opportunities, and other means of making money. Once options are identified, the last stage follows which is the adjustment to the new life, new career and new lifestyle.
