How Your Mindset Affects Your MLM

Think back to when you joined your business. What type of qualities did you look for in your upline? Did you feel confident in their ability to help you grow your business? Did you have a level trust that they wanted you to succeed? If you were to be looking to join a new company, what is it that you would expect from your upline? These are important questions to ask yourself when reflecting upon your own style of leadership. Your mindset in building your MLM is critical. This greatly affects how you communicate with others. This in turn affects how others perceive you.

Leadership Characteristics in Network Marketing

So how do you want to be perceived as a network marketingleader? Think about what characteristics would lead to network marketing success. If you are chasing prospects, trying to constantly overcome objections, and are trying to convince others why your company is so great, you may come across as needing your prospect more than they need you! You do not want to appear needy. This does not convey to others that they could build a successful business with your team. People are not looking to join another business. There are a lot of great companies out there. People are looking for someone who will coach them and help them succeed.

A strong leader does not focus on closing the deal! A lot of energy is not spent trying to convince others to join. In fact, a strong leader screens prospects to see if they are appropriate for their team. They convey confidence, kindness and do not attach any emotions to the whole process. Strong leaders are in control and are not affected by the outcome because they know there will be other prospects.

Take this mini self assessment regarding your leadership characteristics. Answer honestly!

1) Do you leave more than one voicemail message with your prospect? Or do you leave one message and move on if they don't return your call? Leaving several voicemail messages can really make you appear needy. If someone does not return your call, move on!

2) Do you say to your prospects (either verbally or through email) "Feel Free to call me anytime with any questions you may have"? Doing this puts the power back into your prospects hands. It will appear like you are waiting and hoping for them to contact you!

3)Do you have criteria for people who are joining your team or will you take anyone who will sign on the dotted line? You don't want just anyone. If you want your business to be successful, then you need to choose your prospects carefully. You want people on your team who are committed to making it a success.

4) Are you willing to turn down a prospect if you feel they are not right for the team? Or do you feel like you must sign up as many people as possible? I struggled with this concept at first. It was ingrained in me that everyone was considered a prospect and that I should sign up as many people as possible. While this may provide you with short term success, it will not prove to help you in the long term process.

Creating a Leadership Mindset in Network Marketing

You may be saying to yourself right now that you do feel a little desperate So how do you create the proper mindset? One key way is to shift your focus to providing value to others. When I was initially trained with traditional methods of building my network marketing business, I was told not to give out too much information to prospects. I was taught to use the fear of loss / power of gain in the recruitment process. This was to instill a sense of urgency so the prospect would feel compelled to join.

Consider this alternative. What if you were to provide value to others, provide high quality information and attract people to you. What if people were able to see what you had to offer and wanted to join your team because they knew you would be an excellent coach? The people you attract are interested in the industry. You have the potential to generate a larger number quality leads with this focus. As a Network Marketer using the internet can be effective for building a business. You will not have to worry about closing the deal. If a person does not want to be a part of your team, it is no loss. You will have several other prospects to choose from.

Focus on having fun with this process and finding creative ways to give value to others. Try to refrain from putting so much pressure on yourself when building your team. Defining your success on whether or not someone signs up with your company or attaching false outcomes to the whole process can really hinder your progress. If you focus on fear, loss and scarcity, that is what you will attract. You have the power to attract success.
