How to Get Rid of Credit Card Debt

Credit card debt is one of the ugliest of all debt.  It is the easiest to get, the easiest to charge to, and has the highest interest rates.  Combine these all together and you get major problems in the future.

If you want to know how to get rid of credit card debt, you first need to know how you got into it in the first place.  If you can understand how you got to where you are, you can better understand how to get out of it and prevent it in the future.

Why you have Credit Card Debt

The short answer is because you charged to credit cards and didn't pay the credit card company back entirely, but there is much more too it.  It's not complex, but there are considerable causes.

Debt is caused by spending more than you have.  You can't spend more than you have unless you take things out on credit such as with credit cards.  You want to buy something but you don't have enough cash?  Use a credit card.  Do this enough times and that credit card bill will grow larger and larger.

The more you charge, the more the interest will pile on, and overall, the more you will owe.  If you can't pay this all, you will have more and more debt.  Unfortunately, credit cards are so easy to get bad this way.

What are the culprits?  As I mentioned, first, they are easy to get.  How many credit card offers do you get in the male on a daily basis?  Second, charging to your cards is easier than ever because just about everyone accepts them.  Third, they have extremely high interest rates.

How to get Rid of Credit Card Debt

Now that you know what has caused your massive credit card debt, as if you didn't know already, you can learn how to get rid of credit card debt.  I have to warn you, it isn't going to be easy, especially if you are used to getting everything you want just by charging, but it is more than possible.

First, you need to downgrade, downgrade, downgrade.  Just going out to eat less often or buying store brand is nowhere near enough to pay off all this awful debt and fast.  You need to take it seriously.

Cut out one of your phones, landline or cell, preferably whichever is expensive.  Then reduce the bill of the one you keep as low as it can go.  Cut out cable completely because that is not at all necessary.  Cut out fast food, restaurants, movies, or any other food besides your groceries or entertainment that costs anything.

Find ways to save on gas.  Avoid using your car whenever possible.  Be extremely conscience when food shopping.  Buy the bear minimum and get it cheap!  Cut out any other bills you don’t need to survive.

Do you have a spare room or a mortgage you can't handle.  Downgrade!  There is no need to be paying for more space then you need.  If you can rent out the room and get more money than you would otherwise save by downgrading and you can actually get someone to rent it right away, then do so.

Basically what you are doing is cutting out all expenses that you don’t absolutely need to survive.  Remember, this is only going to be temporary until you pay off your credit card debt.  After that, you can bring back some expenses, but you should be able to still consistently save money each month.

Make a budget to help you organize and stick to your plan.  You want something that you can follow and that will help you save what you need to save each month.

Save the same amount each month, if not more.  Figure out how much you can save each month and then figure out how fast you can pay off your credit cards with that.  Pay off the cards with the highest rates first.

Before you know it, you'll have your cards paid off and cash to spare!
