51Why Learn Indonesian?
For one, Indonesian is an interesting and quite amazing language. There are different dialects and it is very difficult to master the literary indonesian language. On the other hand, it's quite easy and straight forward to start speaking a simplyfied Indonesian in which to communicate in every day situations.
I used to live and work in Jakarta in 1980's and found out quickly, that with English alone I was not getting very far, once outside of the city boundaries. Also if you value the contact with the population and venture into markets and other places that are less frequented by foreigners, you definitely need some knowledge of the Indonesian language, or 'Bahasa Indonesia'.

Son three had an amusing experience whilst at high Scool. A Plain look youn lady was teaching him in a clas ful males and females.
His Indonesian did not earn him any honours.
Went off to the Bush as a boy and came back as a man, having taught outback a 1,000 KMs from home. population 92% Indigenous.
At the end of his apprentiship he arrived back in Sydney and because of the outback teaching , he qualified for a Scool of his choice. An that was a prestigious Scool on the Northern Beaches. Teaching maths and has been there for 16 years.
Now the funny part.
The Indonesian Teacher he had whilst at his Senior school as a boy. She was teaching at this School. and her Children were in two of his classes learning Maths.
She related the story to us how she Taught Son three, and she thought his grasp of Indonesian was very low.
She then went on to say that his stanadrd in maths 110% above the Language.
Strangely enough this lady was very attractive not plain as Son Three had told us.
He did retract thhat particular reference, when we questioned.him.
