learn to deal with the elderly

Learning to deal with the elderly can be a very challenging task at time. But with some good knowledge you can learn to deal with them with less stress. Believe me I know how stressful dealing with the elderly can be.
Many elderly or senior citizens are sometimes difficult to deal with especially in a work environment where you are in charge of looking after them or transporting them from place to place. There are a host of ilnesses that you have to be aware of such a dementia and alzeihmers. Also there are some who are not able to take care of themselves and clean or clothe themselves like they used to but still have a normally functioning mind.
There are many different ways to approach the care of seniors. When dealing with seniors it is always a good idea to ask question of family or caregivers to see exactly what the person is suffering from. Having this knowledge can greatly reduce the risk of issues arrising while the person is in your care. If the person is unable to walk unassisted then make sure that you are assisiting them around the house or from one location to another. You will often time need to hold their hand and support them from behind with your hand on their back to help them to balance and move around if they don't have a walker.
Sometimes your senior may be blind, deaf, or both. If you are dealing with a blind person it is always a good idea to ask them if you can help them instead of just taking their hand or arm or their walking stick. Doing this violates their sense of freedom at times. Often then older a person is the more sensitive they are about the freedoms they enjoyed when they were more mobile and self reliant. If your patient is deaf then it is a good idea to know some sign language so that you are able to communicate with that person. If you dont know sign language then you may be able to communicate with them with simple hand and body gestures. If you do talk to someone that is deaf remember to aways look them directly in the face and not talk with you head turned away from them because alot of deaf people can read lips.
If you are transporting the elderly it is always good to have a step stool to assist them in getting in and out of the vehicle. Also you will need to keep an eye out for any potential problems such as seizures.
Dealing with the elderly can be a very joyous time for both them and you because often times you may see them as much as they see their own family.
