Through my years of teaching Spanish, I've heard it said many times "why do the Spanish use the same word for different things". My response is always that so do we in English.

Sometimes we don't even pronounce them the same. Here are just some examples of English words that are the same but have more than one meaning.

  1. With her pink bow in her hair, she took a well deserved Bow
  2. With each number minus on the thermometer, my knees get number
  3. Whenever I draw a picture, I like to keep it safe in my Drawer
  4. When the Sewer had finished all her work ended up in the sewer
  5. We were so close, but the shop had a close sign
  6. We use the wind to wind up our clock
  7. We produce the produce every day
  8. We have projected the project on the projection machine
  9. To the present day they haven't bought a present with them
  10. There is a minute speck of dust on the clock by the Minute hand
  11. The record was recorded for prosperity
  12. The Pasty was looking a bit pasty
  13. The Invalid parking space is invalid in this town
  14. The dove dove straight into the sea
  15. The couple in the third row were having an almighty row
  16. The content of the new book make me very content
  17. She will refuse to take out the refuse
  18. Of all the books I've ever read, there are only 3 I would read again
  19. I will lead now, but the lead in my pencil isn't very sharp
  20. I saw him using his new Saw
  21. I object to being thought of as an object
  22. I must resign myself to the fact he will resign
  23. I have to excuse him because he had a very good excuse
  24. I had to use my finger Nail to remove the nail from the wall
  25. I had to console her over the loss of her new console
  26. he will subject us to the subject of stars
  27. he is going to sink the toy boat in the bathroom sink
  28. Because of the wound he was so wound up

So next time you are thinking Spanish may be hard, remember you understood all this in English so give yourself time and it will be second nature to you in Spanish as well.
