There are a variety of reasons you may want to learn a different language. First, having language ability will make you a valued asset to any company. Firms are always looking for people that have unique skills that will help them expand into new markets. Having a second form of communication makes you just that. You will have the ability to communicate with foreign clients and expand enterprise. Globalization is the new platform for the twenty-first century. Employees that can contribute to this effort will be appreciated and well compensated. Another reason you may want to look into learning another language is for travel purposes. If you have been out of the country, you know it is a different world. If you don’t understand the language, everyday tasks, such as asking the location of the bathroom or the train station or ordering food from a menu can be very troublesome. Lastly, language has a lot to do with how people convey their culture. When you can communicate with people in their own tongue, you will have the opportunity to form more meaningful bonds.
For Americans, it is a novelty to be able to communicate in a different language. Only 9% of Americans say that they can speak another language fluently. Outside the states, this is not the case. In both Asia and Europe it is very common to encounter people that speak two, three, and sometimes four languages. In Europe over 53% of the population speaks another language. Most of the time, English is a required course in school. Why don't Americans have the same motivation to learn a different language? First, English has become the universal form of communication. It is easy for Americans to sit back and have other people learn our language. Second, we don't have the same geographic situation as people from other parts of the world. If you live only a few miles from the border of another country, you are going to have regular opportunities to converse in another language. Lastly, Americans may not have the motivation to spend the time and energy required to learn another language. Traditionally, learning a new language takes years of practice to be conversational. Luckily for us, there are new ways to learn to speak a new language that don’t take as much time.
German is a very powerful language to understand and speak. Germany has the third largest economy in the world and is the number one exporter of goods and services. It has truly become a powerhouse in the global market. German has become the standard language of finance in many countries including Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, and areas of Northern Italy. Germany is the most important trading partner for almost all of European countries and many non-European countries as well. In addition to being useful to business, knowing the basics of German will give you a major advantage as it is the most widely spoken language in Europe. Having German as a second language will empower you in both business and recreation.
If English is your native language, you have an advantage in learning German. German and English have a lot in common. They even come from the same background: Germanic or Proto-Germanic. This means that the grammar is similar, the spelling of words is phonetic, and the pronunciation is related. Researchers say that Americans have the least trouble in picking up German. This is a great incentive to do what it takes to master the language.
You are probably thinking it would be nice to have this language skill, but it would take too much time and effort to become proficient. As mentioned earlier, there are innovative, new techniques that will take the strain out of learning a new language. This is true. The method involves deconstructing the language. The emphasis of this method is not on vocabulary but on understanding how the language is put together. This technique is designed to give a strong foundation on which to build. In the beginning, deconstruction is meant for basic communication. It will take some study time, but will be well worth the effort.
This method starts with gaining an understanding of how the verbs are conjugated. This is where English and German have a lot in common. When referring to him, her, you, or them, German is almost exactly like English; second position does not equal second word. However, there is only one group of words allowed before the conjugated verb. Such groups of words are called "phrases.” While you can put very long phrases in front of the conjugated verb, you mustn't use two.
The Romantic Languages such as Spanish, Italian, French, and Parcheesi have the same structure. If you understand the make-up of a language, you will understand its meaning. German has a lot of verbs at the end construction. In English, you need the position of phrases to determine whether a noun phrase is a subject or an object. In German, the cases tell you which role is assigned to certain noun phrases. Therefore, the word order is less strict. Learning the usage of verbs is an important part of any language.
Next, you need to understand how the nouns work. In German, there are a variety of words that can be used in the place of the English word “the.” You will need to match the article with the form of the noun. This will help clear up a lot of confusion when trying to communicate. The whole point of the deconstruction method is to break the language down and understand the nuts and bolts.
The ability to deconstruct a language may take a bit of time, but it is well worth the investment. Most courses teach you how to memorize sentences. When you learn that way, you are only learning how to speak simple sounds but are missing the real meaning behind the words. When you deconstruct a language, you learn the grammar and sentence structure. This will give you a strong base to add vocabulary words.
There are many different ways to learn a different language. Classes are offered at your local high school or university. Another option is to converse with natives, which will give you the chance to practice what you have learned. You can also purchase a learning guide from a bookstore or online retailer. There are a variety of merchants that specialize in foreign language training guides. The best method would be a combination of all of these. Take the time to buy an in-depth study guide, breakdown the language, and find friends to practice with.
Learning a different language will bring both joy and increased opportunities into your life. It can help progress and expand your career. Another language will also provide the opportunity for you to develop new and exciting relationships. It may take a little work, but in the end it will be worth the sacrifice.
