In recent years, LED technology has advanced to such and extent it has now becoming a cost effective method for general lighting. As the cost of white LEDs have decreased and increased improvements in the light output, it has become feasible to construct household LED lightbulbs. Due to their long life which can allow a 5-10 year continuous use and low power consumption they are rapidly becoming a valid alternative to halogen or CFL bulbs.

Nevertheless, due to their inherent nature each LED has a narrow direct light spread compared to traditional bulbs, therefore it is necessary for the manufacturer of LED light bulbs to cluster a large number of them together to get a more even spread of light. For this reason, people tend to use them mainly for either mood lighting or in spotlight situations.

As mentioned earlier 240V or 110V LED lightbulbs can be used instead of halogen bulbs as direct replacement for standard GU10 based bulbs. The LED bulb allows for a substantial reduction in energy consumption, a 25 Watt halogen bulb can be replaced with a 2 Watt LED spot light bulb, the lower power consumption not only saves electricity but also it runs cooler than the halogen.

There are two common mains halogen lamp bases, the GZ10 and GU10.

The GZ10 lamps are designed for a lot of heat comes out of the back, and GU10s have reflectors to direct the heat forwards. It is possible to put a GU10 lamp in a GZ10 fitting, but not the other way around. This was designed to ensure the rear reflected heat would damage it the socket.

Advantages of LED Light bulb

• LEDs have better energy efficiency over conventional bulbs and halogen bulbs, with around a 80% to 90% energy saving

• LEDs are very long operating life

• A range of light outputs, Warm White 2700K - 4300k, Daylight white 5000K to 6500K etc
• LED lightbulbs due to their lower power consumption puts out less heat into their surroundings.
  

Disadvantages of LED Light bulb

• LED Lightbulbs can't be easily dimmed without extra electronics.

• LEDs  are still not quite bright enough for general use.

• LED light are very directional and narrow.
