One of my boys favorite toys of all time are Lego Bricks. Actually Legos is one of my favorite toys too. A box of Lego bricks has absolutely endless possibilities. It can be so much fun to build anything that pops into your head using a box of the colorful interlocking bricks. Lego sells both boxes of assorted Legos and sets with directions to follow. My sons and I love playing with both.
Lego
History of LEGO
Lego was started by a carpenter named Ole Kirk Christiansen in Billund Denmark. He began making wooden toys in 1932. In the 1940's they started making plastic toys as well. In 1949 the famous Lego Bricks were born. Legos were actually based on Hillary Page of Kiddicraft's idea and patent from 1939. Christiansen bought the rights to the patent and started making his own Lego Bricks. At the time plastic toys were considered cheap and few people would buy them. In 1954 Godtfred the son of Ole Christiansen was talking with a buyer and realized the true potential of selling the Lego Bricks as a creative building system. He worked on getting the bricks perfect. So that they could more easily lock together without coming apart until the user tries to take them apart. He experimented with different plastics and molds. On January 28th 1958 the Lego Brick was perfect. Even todays Lego bricks work fine with them.
Lego got its name from the Danish phrase leg godt which means play well. The LEGO companies motto is "Only the best is good enough".

Lego Artists
I am amazed at all of the great artists that work with Legos. Whether it is a stop motion animator making a cool youtube video. Or a sculptor that works with colored Lego bricks. They have all found great outlets for their creativity and love of Lego. Last week at our local mall, the LEGO Store had a LEGO Master come and make an 8 foot tall pirate with all of the kids.

Lego Video Games
In 2005 The Lego Star Wars video game was released and it was an enormous hit. Soon two more Lego Star Wars games were released for the various video game systems. The games are great. They offer numerous characters, large levels and are a lot of fun. The games have great repeat value because you can play in both a story mode and a free play mode. After you complete each story you can go back into the level and collect anything you might have missed. The games have very funny scenes that kind of parody the movies between the levels. Lego has also made additional games for Batman and Indiana Jones. My boys and I love all of the games.

How much do you love Legos?
Thanks for sharing those great lego videos - love Indianna Jones and the 'cake or death' ones! Yes I think Lego never date and provides hours of fun for both children and adults (assisting them :) )
This Hub whooshed me back to my childhood. My two brthers and I had sacksful of Lego - there weren't so many kits around then - in the 1960's - but bags of the different sized bricks and little booklet with design and building ideas.
As an adult Iv visited legoland in Denmark in the la 1970's and Legoland near Windsor in the UK in the early 1990's - great fun - fantastic models !
We had lego as children, and my brother still has fun with some technical lego stuff in his early 20s!
My 3 year old son is mad keen on duplo, and gets a lot of fun out of it.
Cherrish77, it was nice of your brothers to share their Legos. Your son will love them too. My boys never really liked the Duplo blocks that much. But, they really got into Lego when they could use the smaller pieces.
Claire, their are a lot of great Lego videos on YouTube. You should check out some others. Eddie Izzard has some other hilarious ones but, they use lots of swears.
Iphegenia, I am glad to bring you back to your childhood. It is one of my main goals in a lot of my hubs. I would love to visit Legoland someday. That is awesome you got to go. My local mall has a great LEGO Store and I have been to the huge one in Disney that is awesome.
LondonGirl, I am surprised that their are so many sets are rated 16 and up. It is great though. They seem to get pretty expensive for them too. My local Lego Store has the Millennium Falcon on display and it looks awesome. The LEGO Mindstorm is great for older kids and adults too. I am amazed at all of the advanced robotics you can do with them. I can't wait to try them when my boys get older.
Hi Jim,
I agree! Legos are among the top of the list for my son. He loves em! =)
Thanks Tonya, Legos are the best. Creative and fun.
Legos are a must for early education classrooms. When I taught young adults how to be preschool teachers, I provided lesson plan items and resources for them to take into their practicums to teach with. Legos were one of the resources. Kids learn colors, math, building science, community construction and cooperative playing when they play with Legos. Parents who have Legos at home really help with the education process. Good, informative article! Thumbs up!
Thanks srhgompf, Legos are great for learning and give kids a sense of accomplishment when they complete something.
"Great hub!"

thks for introducing me the 'lego'. nice hub
Cool hub! I always loved to play with legos and build cities and what not. Good hub!

I remember Lego from my childhood - we were always losing vital bits, which means the things we were making didn't quite look right!
Sukkran, I'm glad to introduce you to LEGO. You will need to try and find some so you can try them out. Legos are awesome.
John, I'm glad you liked my Lego Hub.
Silver Rose, I know the feeling. Recently my son insisted on opening his new Legos in the car and later realized he lost a piece and couldn't find it. He made do without it pretty easily though.

I couldn't wait to read this. My 8-year-old son and his friends' current favorite toys are "lego men." He and his friends trade them and play endlessly with them. Thanks for the info.

Woot I love legos. Even now I could sit there for hours building with them. They are one of the finest toys there are..
Thanks Wingswriter and blondepoet, Legos are among mine and my boys favorite toys. My kids bring them everywhere we go. I'm guessing we lose a few bricks here and there.
You are so right! Legos are great toys--for both girls and boys! I've been looking for the Lego Police Station set. I can't seem to find one. I did find the Spongebob Squarepants set, but I just couldn't bring myself to fork over $50 for it!
The history of Legos was very interesting!
Legos are pretty expensive for the bigger and more complex sets. A lot of times I get great deals just after Christmas at Target and Kmart. Last year I got the giant castle set for $25 instead of $100. Then I saved it for my oldest son's birthday. I will add some Ebay links when I get a chance their are some good deals there too. It is definitely cheaper to buy the plain assorted bricks. Then you can go to the Lego store and fill a small bucket with various accessories like wheels and windows etc... My boys were excited about that same Spongebob set because it comes with a newer version of Squidward with a more accurate head.
When my kids were little my ma-in-law bought lots of 2nd hand Lego at garage sales and the like. The washed it all in disinfectant, scrubbing with a toothbrush. As a result, we still have a big box of Lego bricks - visiting kids love it.
Thanks 2patricias, that is a great idea. I have seen 2nd hand Legos pretty cheap on Craigslist and Ebay. I don't make it to too many garage sales. But, I bet if you find the right one you could do really well. I have found other great toys at garage sales. My aunt goes to them all of the time and gets all kinds of great stuff cheap.
i love legos. nice hub
Thanks Lgali, as you can see I love Legos too. You can truly make almost anything with enough Lego bricks.
You are definitely right. Lego toys brings forth endless posibilities. It will really develop creativity. I do have a lego way back then.
great hub. thanks
My children, now adults, used to do some wonderful things with Lego. Both the boy and the girls. A very creative skilful toy. Children learn a lot and grow by using these.
Thanks for the comments I am glad you liked my Lego Hub.
I loved playing with Legos when I was younger, my mom bought me a big bin of them... now I've passed them on to my little brothers who love them even more! My little brothers 6 & 8 y/o spend hours playing with legos now... Legos supply lots of creative designs now... like mini Gerbil houses. :) Nice Hub.
Thanks Cam Anju, Legos are great since they can practically last forever. They are great to pass on. I'm sure your little brothers love them. And so do the Gerbils.
My two brothers had a couple of big rubber tubs of Legos. It was always fun to be invited by them to play with them. They were more interested in building ships and spaceships, but I always like the medievil themed Legos. We were always seeing how to build durable things. The ultimate durable test would be to throw the object at the ground and if it didn't break apart we knew it passed. Legos are the best things to play with ever!
Thanks Locke, it is great you got to play Legos together. That is cool that you learned how to make something so durable with them. I will have to try that with my sons sometime.
Wonderful to learn the history of the Lego! My boys love to play with them too. We scored a huge bin of Legos and K'Nex through Freecycle to add to our collection, and now there are new ships and cars being designed and built everyday!
great toys, I like your hub. LEGO is international toys.
Oh I am so old, I am pre lego lol. I remember Meccano sets though
Hi Ethel, you are only as old as you feel. So go grab a box of Legos and make up for what you missed. I looked up Meccano and it seemed pretty cool. It was a lot like the Erector Sets. Thanks for visiting.
You can never have enough Lego! It seems that we keep running out as the kids never want to dismantle what they make. Anyone else have that problem???
Lego is the top toy for all children in my mind. It has the added advantage of teaching children to be tidy in their personal activities. The reason being, after Mom and Dad step on one in the dark a few times, housekeeping will be enforced by the parents. OUCH! Gotta love Lego!

I used to love lego's as a kid, I never got any myself, but my brothers did. I can't wait till my son is old enough to play with the smaller ones. The baby legos don't connect like I think they should.
