Add To "Must Watch" List

These are some movies that you may have missed in the theaters or on the dvd shelf. Some may have missed them because they were too young at the time of release. Some may have missed them because of limited release. For whatever reason, these movies need to be seen by the horror movie fan.

Some movies on this list may not be considered part of the actual horror genre but should be of interest to the horror fan.

Here is my list, in no particular order.

Session 9

This movie builds the suspense extremely well. Session 9 is set at the condemned Danvers State Insane Asylum, a building seemed built just for a horror movie (see pic below).

A haz-mat team contracted to clear the building of asbestos is the base premise of this little known thriller. A series of old reel to reel audio tapes found by one of the workers sets off the suspense. The tapes contain sessions with a patient suffering from multiple personalities. As the worker listens (over a period of days), it is revealed that there is a particular personality that the doctor wants to talk to. Finally, in the tape labeled "Session 9", this personality comes out to talk. Watch the movie and find out what is revealed.

Ed Gein

This is a biography of Ed Gein, who is the inspiration for Leatherface (Texas Chainsaw Massacre), Buffalo Bill (Silence of the Lambs) and Norman Bates (Psycho).

Gein was a disturbed individual who practiced graverobbing, not for monetary reasons but for body parts. One of his insane goals was to create a female suit made of actual skin!  Due to the provoking of his dead mother, he eventually graduates to murder .

This movie is actually a very well made and accurate depiction of the disturbed murderer. Great acting, directing and writing.

Return of the Living Dead

This is such a funny and entertaining movie. I don't need to go into details. The dead coming to life hungering for brains is all you need to know. Watch for the great performance of James Karen. (pictured with head biting finger)

Slither

Crazy movie!  Funny and gross.  Think of it as a comedic and violent Invasion of the Body Snatchers.  Watch it and you will laugh and then puke.

Kalifornia

Road trip from hell! This is one of Brad Pitt's greatest roles. He plays an ultra white trash freak that doesn't mind a little murder.

David Duchovny plays an author on a road trip of morbid sights involving serial killers in the US. In order to save money, he posts a car/gas share ad. Unfortunately for him, Brad Pitt and Juliette Lewis answer the ad.

Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer

Disturbing and a little too realistic, almost like a snuff film.

Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer is loosely based on the life of serial killers Henry Lee Lucas and Ottis Toole. This movie was originally shot in 1986 and given the X-rating due to the graphic depiction of the killings. It was finally released 1989 as unrated.

Just a little trivia: Ottis Toole confessed to the infamous kidnapping and murder of Adam Walsh (John Walsh's son, made famous by the TV movie Adam). This confession is thought to be false; just sick bravado on Toole's part.

Update: On December 16 2008, Ottis Toole was confirmed as the killer of Adam Walsh.

Freeway

Slightly based on Little Red Riding Hood with Reese Witherspoon the girl and Kiefer Sutherland as the wolf.

Witherspoon plays a hitchhiker trying to get to her grandmothers house and gets picked up by seemingly meek Sutherland. Unfortunately for her, he turns out to be the I-5 Killer.

This is an unpredictable dark comedy that is worth checking out.

Donnie Darko

Weird and trippy. The title character is a teenager (Jake Gyllenhaal) who suffers from schizophrenia. When Donnie begins to see a giant demonic-like rabbit that tells him that the world will end in 28 days, he is not sure (as well as the viewer) whether it is a hallucination or genuine.

Very cool movie! Donnie Darko has risen to the rank of cult classic. Great soundtrack too.

Flatliners

Great premise: med students who experiment with the afterlife by stopping each other's hearts then bringing them back to life. They soon find out that the afterlife is nothing to play with. They each bring back personal ghosts that haunt them in their flesh and blood lives.

Flatliners stars some great young 80's actors: Kiefer Sutherland, Julia Roberts and Kevin Bacon.

Jacob's Ladder

Another trippy movie. Jacob's Ladder is about a Vietnam vet that experiences very disturbing hallucinations years after the war. These visions, he believes, are due to an experimental drug that was tested on his platoon. This drug was supposed make the soldiers more aggressive in combat but had horrible results when tested in the field.

Jacob searches out his old platoon buddies to find out if they are having the same visions. He runs into many obstacles during his quest to find the cause and cure for his hallucinations. What he finds on his search is something unexpected to him and the viewer.

Some of these aren't horror movies but they're exciting to watch. Freeway is a great movie. Try Black Christmas (1974).

Yeah, I expanded a little with the horror genre. I included movies that would be interesting to people that like horror.

Kpfingaz...Do you have something against Michael Rooker or is it just a coincidence that the two you did not see both star him? ;-)

I don't know about Freeway and Donnie Darko being Horror films but they are good. Here are a few you may have missed that I highly recommend:

Stuck, The Signal, Clownhouse, Save the Green Planet, Inside, Funny Games & Frontier(s)

I also just recently saw Poultrygeist; Return of the Chicken Dead...you get what you pay for on that one...it was amusing.

I thought i've seen just about every horror movie out there. There are quite a few here that I had the privilage to watch. I got a link for you to get the latest horror movies. When they hit the theaters, about 2 days later they are on this site. This is what you have to do. Go to google and type OVGUIDE.com. This will take you to a search engine. Click the Top line. Another window will follow. Go to watchmovies.net and you'll see all the new releases. I enjoy this site and I'm sure you would too.

Another great list of suggestions, imadork! I have not seen Freeway but love both Kiefer and Reese. Reminds me of one that I saw years ago called The Vanishing. I think it was Dutch. They remade it -- and I wanna say that one starred Kiefer Sutherland, too, but not as the bad guy.

Have you seen The Hitcher? You'll never pick up a hitchhiker again:-).

I somehow missed all of these except for flatliners...

My favourite one is "Los Otros" with Nicole Kidman, I still shiver everytime I see it again!

Princessa: I assume Los Otros is translated into The Others. That is a great movie! The ending gives you a different perspective on the whole haunted house thing.

Good list man, there not all horror, but they are good movies nonetheless. If you get a chance you might want to check out a little movie called Creep. It's atmospheric as hell and definitely overlooked.

Scott W: Thanks for the comment and suggestion.  I will check Creep out. Just to be sure, what year did Creep come out? There are a few movies named Creep.

BTW...my name is Scott and my middle initial is W.  Kinda freaked me out when I saw that Scott W commented on one of my hubs.  I thought I had a freaky stalker!

I love Freeway and Slither! Good list! Another one under the radar is Bug (it's sort of a thriller based on a play). GingerSnaps and Frankenhooker - good ones too!

I have seen and like both Bug and Gingersnaps. Have not had the pleasure on Frankenhooker though.

Thanks for the comment PT.
