Liposuction

Liposuction is also known as Liposculpture suction lipectomy, lipoplasty,Tummy Tuck or simply as Lipo. The procedure involves cosmetic surgery whereby layers of fat are removed from various parts of the body to reshape its appearance. Body parts commonly involved with Lipo include the chin, neck, tummy, legs, arms and thighs.

It is important to remember that Liposuction is purely for cosmetic purposes and whilst it should make you feel and look good, it should not be used as a means of losing weight or treating obesity. It will not prevent you from developing heart disease nor will it improve your health.

Before you consider Lipo, here are some issues to think about:

  • Finances- Cheap Liposuction does not exist. This is an expensive procedure which is often not covered by your private health insurance. If you have private health cover, call them and find out beforehand.
  • Do you really need this procedure? Not only is it expensive, Liposculpture is not without risks and can be a life threatening procedure. Have you considered alternatives such as diet and exercise?
  • If you still want to proceed, find and talk to a well qualified Plastic Surgeon. Make sure you understand the procedure and the associated risks. Don't hold back with any questions you have. While you're there, get a quote for the procedure.
  • Take time out to think about your decision. Get a second opinion if you have to.
  • Perhaps, the most important thing to remember are your expectations. Liposculpture is Cosmetic Surgery, not a life changing phenomenon.

Liposuction Techniques include

  • Ultrasound-assisted – an ultrasound device is used to melt the pockets of fat to make them easier to remove.
  • Tumescent Liposuction– fluids containing a local anaesthetic are injected into the fat pockets.
  • Super-wet – the surgeon injects approximately the same quantity of water as there is fat to be removed.
  • Fluid injection – a combination of local anaesthetic, epinephrine and saline solution is injected into the fat pocket. Epinephrine helps to constrict blood vessels and limit blood loss and bruising.

Liposuction Procedure

The video will explain this better than any words can. Click on the arrow in the screen below to watch the video.

Expect the following after the procedure

  • Bruising and swelling
  • Possible numbness and minor pain
  • Antibiotics to prevent infection
  • Insertion of a small drainage tube – this may be inserted beneath the skin for a couple of days to prevent fluid build-up
  • To start walking around as soon as possible – your doctor may advise this to reduce swelling and help prevent blood clots from forming in your legs
  • A pressure garment – this may need to be worn over the treated area to control swelling and help the skin adjust to the new underlying shape.

Remember, any surgical procedure has its own potential risks and complications. If you develop anythin other than the above, call your surgeon or go to the emergency department of your hospital.

Remember, there are alternatives to Lipo. If you do proceed with surgery, it is important to continue:

  • Eating a healthier, low fat diet
  • Exercise
  • Massage
  • Accepting yourself as you are.

These alternative or supplementary treatments will either naturally cure your problem or help prevent the recurrence of the problem.
