Creativity of the Mind

How Creating Art May Stave Off Types of Dementia. Painting, Sculpting & Exercising the Artistic Mind Could Help Reduce Symptoms.

It’s always remarkable to watch the creative human spirit express itself through art. It’s particularly heartening to observe this in people with types of dementia who have lost their usual means of self- expression through language.

People suffering from types of dementia might not be able to recall word like paintbrush or canvass, but can dip this utensil into jars of paint and cover a canvass with memories that have been locked inside their minds for years. This is only one example of artful engagement used to treat people with all types of dementia. Many doctors and caregivers are exploring what happens to the creative spirit and how engaging in the arts might help to increase memory function.

Placing people with types of dementia in art-enriched programs and stimulating environments could help to improve memory or attention.

According to recent studies, a new diagnosis of dementia is made every 72 seconds in this country. By the year 2050, our current population of 5 million Americans affected by types of dementia could swell to almost 16 million. Research in new areas of treatment, such as using the arts to engage people living with types of dementia, is becoming more prevalent.

Preliminary research suggests mentally stimulating activities, such as a museum tour, might offer benefits to people with types of dementia. What's nice is that a piece of art doesn't require any memory. It's right in front of you. Dementia people seem calmed by activities such as museum tours and art classes.

These programs also help caregivers. Seventy percent of all people with Alzheimer's live at home. And the 24/7 care that sometimes is required can lead to depression and burnout. Exploring creative expression offers a way for family members to connect in the way they used to, before disease had shut down communication.

Thanks for this great information. My husbands grandmother has dementia and his grandfather is her care giver. I can not imagine what it must be like for him. It's amazing to watch him with her. He is so kind and thoughtful, God bless him. Thanks again. I'll be passing this on.
