Genital warts, also known as venereal warts (the scientific name is condyloma or condylomata accuminata) is the most widely spread sexually transmitted disease. It is highly contagious and spreads through skin to skin contact during intercourse with an infected partner.

The cause of genital warts is HPV, The human papillomavirus. There are in fact more than 100 types of the HPV virus, some of these types are more dangerous than others and some can even cause cancer. The HPV types or strains that cause genital warts are identified by the following numbers: 6,11,30,42,43,44,45,51,52,54.

It is important to note here that most people who catch the virus do not develop any signs of genital warts or any symptoms of any kind. And in some cases, a person can have the virus for years before developing the first signs of genital warts.

Unfortunately, some people suffer new outbreaks of genital warts after treating them. That's because the treatment of genital wart does not eliminate HPV. There are in fact no known cures for getting you rid of HPV. It is however well known that in 90% of cases, the test for HPV become negative 6 to 12 months after genital warts are treated.

In some cases the immune system fails to tackle the virus, and that's why in 10% of cases, HPV stays in the body causing a probability of having genital warts come back. The good news though, is that this situation can't go on forever and after a few outbreaks, the body gets rid of the virus.
