Where is Mr Bird?

Alas, winter is here! The birds are flying south and dreaming of surf and sand and we must reluctantly say goodbye to our special bird. Each spring we are visited by a feathered friend we affectionately named "Mr. Bird". We have watched Mr. Bird grow from a tiny baby to a full size adult.

We first noticed him about four years ago. He decided to take up residence in the top left corner, underneath our front porch. He was tiny and could easily fit on the 1/2" ledge that was provided. The next spring he was much larger, but still decided this corner of our porch was his home. He perched himself on the 1/2" ledge but looked as though he could tumble at any time.

My husband and I, being the animal lovers that we were, became very concerned. Although we knew that he would not fall to the ground and become injured we embarked on building more comfortable sleeping quarters. We found a scrap piece of wood and cut it to fit in the corner. We painted it white to match the rest of the decor and not look well....hideous. Mr. Bird was not very happy with the paint smell and flew to the opposite corner of the porch and slept there for a few nights, but returned to his old corner after a few days. He did look more comfortable and we were satisfied with our ingenious idea. He stayed there the rest of the summer and the following summer. We became obsessed with watching for him every night in his little "nest".

This spring when the weather was getting warmer, there in the corner was our little friend...or so we thought. We turned on the porch light to take a closer look. This was NOT Mr. Bird. The nest has been hijacked and taken over by an imposter. I was actually a little bit perturbed by this. What if Mr. Bird comes back and has nowhere to stay? What if there was a duel over the nest and someone gets hurt? This imposter has got to GO! My husband politely reminded me things would work out just fine and not to worry so much.

Taking a broom and shooing him away was no good. The front porch was two stories high and I am not to great with the ladder. Sending him an eviction notice was certainly out of the question. I will just have to wait patiently and let nature take its course. As they say, "All good things come to those who wait".

The following night as I looked out my front window the real Mr. Bird appeared. He promptly took over his nest and settled in just fine. The imposter, who was following right behind, promptly took quarters in the opposite corner. We now have Mr. Bird and Mrs. Bird (???). I never knew bird watching could be so exhausting. I will rest a few days and then move on to my next conquest...how to better "fox proof" the hen house.
