Pets are getting fatter just like people are. Many pet owners are concerned about this because of the many problems and diseases that are associated with fat and obese pets. Thousands of pets are unhealthy because their owners over feed them and they don't exercise enough. In the UK, it is estimated that nearly 50 percent of dogs and cats are overweight with about 15 percent considered clinically obese. Similar problems exist in other countries such as the USA. Pet obesity is a growing problem. One way for pet owners to avoid this problem is to feed their pets on low fat dog food and to ensure that they get enough exercise or physical activity.

In many cases, pet obesity is a result of too many snacks and treats, and a lack of exercise. Many people who live in cities lead fast and busy lifestyles with no time to look after dogs properly. Some pets are obese because of their owners lack of education and awareness of pet obesity.

Heart problems, arthritis and diabetes are some of the health problems associated with pets carrying excess weight. The combination of lack of exercise and poor diet can also result in a shortened life-span for your dog. Vets recommend a balanced diet and exercise as the best way to keep pets healthy.

Dogs are different from human beings in that they need more exercise and they need different sorts of foods. If you are already having problems weight, first focus on feeding your dog a balanced diet and follow the recommended feeding guidelines on pet food. Then make sure that your dog gets plenty of exercise of at least 30 minutes every day for a small dog and more for a larger dog.

Many food companies have introduced low calorie and low fat dog food that you can feed your dog. Avoid putting pets on crash diets as this can be dangerous. Introduce changes gradually and ask your vet about special low fat feeding plans.

Low fat dog foods are usually recommended for dogs that cannot tolerate typical pet food ingredients. These may include those that are less active, overweight or older. This type of pet food is meant to provide a lower fat, lower calorie version of the regular pet food.
