Post Lights
Have a great deck that works perfect during the daytime, but doesn't cut the mustard once the sun goes down? Enter deck lights. There are many options for lighting your deck, this hub will detail great options for using low voltage lighting on the posts.
Deck Post Lights Jazz Up Your Outdoor Space
Not only do deck lights serve a functional purpose of providing light while it is dark outside, they also provide your deck and outdoor spaces with a touch of class. The lights avaible vary in terms of design and looks. Also a lighted deck takes a very visually appealing look at night as opposed to a dark outdoor space.
How To Install Low Voltage Post Lights
Here is a great video on how to install the low voltage lighting to bring your deck into a great night time area. What is required is to drill a hole from the top of the post downward to allow for the wire to make it to the light. This first video shows the guy using an auger bit to drill that hole. Auger bits are great for cutting through a lot of wood because they allow the bit to actually grab the wood and help it move through. This helps your body not have to put all the force into cutting the hole. Make sure to drill the hole deep enought to easily fish the wires up through the hole and to the actual light.
Drill Hole Underneath Railing
Up next is drilling the hole from underneath the railing to make it into your first hole you drilled from the top. Just drill until you feel the bit get into your other hole. It will be obvious once you hit this hole as the bit will jump through the empty space quickly. Make sure not to drill through the other side of the deck post as this would just introduce an eye sore and place for water to enter.
Running The Wire For Your Low Voltage Deck Post Lights
Now to where the rubber hits the road. To have low voltage lights, you need to run the low voltage wire to the power source! In order to make this a reality, we need to get the lights from the place where the lights sit atop the post to where your power source is. Obviously you want to run all the lights on the same circuit and to do that make sure that you have enough holes drilled to make that a reality.
Transformer For The Low Voltage Deck Lights
Finally, after you have run the wires to all the lights it is back to the transformer for the power. A couple of key things to remember is that the transformer has to be above the ground to ensure that it stays away from water and other things that could cause it problems. All that is required from here is to hook up the lights to the wiring you already pulled. Do that to all the lights you have and you are set to go.
