Mackenzie Phillips - Life after One Day at a Time
62
Laura Mackenzie Phillips is the daughter of John Phillips, lead singer of music group The Mamas and the Papas. When she was young, celebrities such as Neil Diamond, John Sebastian, and Barry McGuire would visit her house. It seems that Mackenzie was always destined for stardom! In 1975, she would land the role that made her famous – Julie Cooper on One Day at a Time.
Unfortunately, during the run of show, Mackenzie became addicted to cocaine and alcohol. This oftentimes caused her to show up late for work and sometimes miss filming entirely. Mackenzie refused to seek help for her problem, so this left the executive producer of the show no choice but to fire her. After a stint in rehab, Mackenzie came back to the cast of One Day at a Time in 1981. However, she soon became addicted again and was fired indefinitely in 1983. Mackenzie never returned before the show’s cancellation. However, she did appear in the 2005 One Day at a Time reunion special.
In the 1980s and early 90s, her father, also a recovering addict, finally helped Mackenzie kick her addiction. In 1994, she played a substance abuse counselor on Beverly Hills 90210, where she helped Luke Perry’s character Dillon with his habit. In 1996, she played a similar role on Guiding Light, where she helped Annie Dutton (played by Cynthia Watros; Libby from Lost) get through her drug habit.
Mackenzie went on to land a steady gig on the Disney Channel series So Weird, where she played a rock star named Molly Phillips. Since So Weird has ended, she’s guest starred on many TV shows such as ER, Crossing Jordan, Without a Trace, NYPD Blue, and the family drama 7th Heaven. She was most recently in the thriller The Jacket, starring Adrien Brody.
