Bath Salts and Essential Oils

The role of bath salts in aromatherapy treatments is twofold.  Epsom salts contain natural healing benefits by relieving muscle and joint aches and/or pains treating the physical aspect of the body.  Also, the aromas produced by essential oils influence the psychological processes of the body resulting stress reduction, relaxation and sense of well-being.

Choosing Essential Oil Scents

Before you begin making homemade bath salts you will need to select one or two scents of essential oils. Lavender is the most common and popular scent for relaxation and stress relief. Peppermint creates energy, and is great for a morning pick-me-up. And Eucalyptus is used to alleviate the symptoms of colds or congestion.

If you are unsure what essential oil to select, ask an associate at the store – they may be able to recommend something too you. Or let your nose do the choosing for you. We are naturally attracted to scents that will provide the most healing benefit to our body, both physically and mentally.

Ingredients

  • Glass Jar with a Sealed Lid
  • 1 box of Epsom salts (unscented)
  • Food Coloring (Optional)
  • Essential Oil(s) or Essential Oil Blend
  • 1 tbs. Glycerin (moisturizes the skin)

How to Make Homemade Bath Salts

Mix 2 drops of Essential Oil, 3 drops of food coloring (add more/less depending on preference), and Glycerin in a glass dish. Combine 1 box of Epsom salts and Essential Oil mix in a Ziploc bag and mix until the scent and color is evenly distributed. Transfer the mix into a sealed glass jar.

A Note When Buying Pre-Made Bath Salts

If you do not have the time to make homemade bath salts there are many varieties of pre-made bath salts available on the marketplace. When choosing bath salts examine the ingredients and use products made with 100% organic ingredients or Essential Oils. Many products will claim to be aromatherapy treatments, but are made with synthetic scents.  Only naturally scented bath salts made with essential oils will provide all the benefits of aromatherapy.

By using store or personally designed aromatherapy bath salts you can turn your bathroom into your own personal spa.  Enjoy!
