The music world can be a hard business to get into but if you love music, singing or playing music then you can find some easy and cheap ways to get started and get yourself known in the music industry. You need to build a fan base, get your band or yourself as an artist known, promote your demo and get professional recordings of your songs. If you are trying to get a music deal then it is a good idea to have a few pictures of you or your band and a good demo with 3 - 5 songsyou have recorded.

If you don't like writing songs, you can always sing songs that are already well known. You can sing cover songs as they are or in your own style. There are many songwriters out there with songs ready to be picked up by singers or bands and a lot who already have record deals but are looking for the right act to promote their material.

To get more exposure for your music there are a few things you can do. Here are a few ideas:

  • You can upload your songs to online music websites, create your bio, make music industry contacts and build a fan base. You can even sell your own mp3's or cd's online, or get paid for music streams.
  • You can send your demos to record companies to get a record deal so that the record label can promote you or your band.
  • You can go to open mic nights and jam sessions, every week, meet other musicians and music producers who may ask you to do gigs, or to record one of your tunes.
  • You can get gigs in small venues, take your cd's with you and give them away as freebies
  • You can enter songwriting competitions and other song conteststo be in with a chance to win prizes like cash, recording studio time, and even a record deal.

Once you start to build a fan base and get known in the music industry you may get asked to do more gigs and to be a support act for some more well known bands or singers. If you have a lot of songs already written or some good covers songs you know then you will be ready if you meet a producer who wants to do a song with you or a songwriter who wants you to sing his or her song. A lot of producers and songwriters already have record deals so if you do a tune with them they will also promote it for you and you may be able to get introduced to some big record companies like this.

So it is important to sing out in bars and nightclubs, or in smaller music venues so that you get more well known, meet more musicians and can make some good music industry contacts.
