Survey explosion

I have been getting e-mails from a few friends asking me the reason for not having published any hub for more than a week now. It’s so heartening to know that there are people (in Hub Community) who really look forward to reading my articles. So, here I am, again, trying to share something useful, only after getting the first hand experience myself. I know that my observations (which follow) would help only those who are still trying to get into this side of ‘home based business’ and those, who have tried this in the past or are currently engaged in this money making tool, would agree with my assessment.

Alluring advertisements

What was I doing all this while? Surfing…..on the internet. My mail box had literally been overflowing with the ‘Survey offer’ e-mails for the last one month and this nuisance started from the day I, unknowingly, stumbled on a marketing website in search of software for my computer. The only genuine mistake I committed was, to put my e-mail id in a questionnaire placed on their web page and what followed, was a flood of unsolicited e-mails from their affiliates and partner sites. One good thing happened though. I got a chance to test the legitimacy of this online money making system. The way they lure the unsuspecting and needy customers (like you and me) by splashing their flashy and ‘mouth watering’ advertisements all over the internet, prompted me to do some research and ascertain the success of this money making tool. Without exaggerating, the number of survey companies which I tried to explore, was more than a hundred and I wouldn’t be surprised if someone told me that there are thousands of such companies operating within United States only. Most of these companies claim that you can earn anywhere between $50 - $150 per day by taking simple online surveys but believe me the picture they paint is far from being true. You want to know the results of my research? Let’s have a look without beating around the bush.

Online surveys—unveiled!

1. Some sites would want you to pay one time membership of $49.99 (plus taxes) so as to give you access to their database consisting of unlimited offers by enlisted companies.

2. Once you gain access to their database, don’t think that you have got the key to success. Not yet. Things are not so simple.

3. You have to get registered (separately) with hundreds of companies listed in there and each registration form might take about 5-8 minutes to fill in. Besides, some companies would want you to fill up ‘Profile Surveys’ which helps them to identify which surveys are related and best suited for you. These surveys take you between 25-30 minutes to complete. You, probably, will not be able to finish the registration process in a single day. Depends on how long you can sit glued to the computer screen.

4. Assuming that you finished all the registration forms, now what? Now, wait for them to send you the surveys. Don’t worry, the inflow starts within a few minutes of the enrolment process. Fair enough! Then what is the problem?

5. For each survey you would be offered somewhere around $0.50 to $1.00 and that too if you qualify for that particular survey. Also each survey would take you about 15-20 minutes for completion. This means you are earning less than a dollar in 15 minutes. Depends on how satisfied you would be with that kind of remuneration. I leave it for you to decide. My job is only to place facts on record.

6. Alright, I know you want to tell me that companies do pay $25- $40 for taking surveys. Yes, it’s a fact but how do you get paid that much? Not by simply taking surveys but by completing ‘sponsor offers’ as well. This is the real catch which they wouldn’t let you know at the time of registration. You discover the strings attached, much later. Regarding these ‘sponsor offers’ you have to try their products for which you are supposed to pay anywhere around $8 - $10 (per offer) depending on the kind of product and the trial offer associated with the product. You would be paid a good amount ($25-$40) for completing the survey, only when you try / buy their products. If you want to take that route, your choice.

See for yourself

I have uploaded two videos for you so that you get a clearer picture of how this system works.

The 1st one is an advertising gimmick and in the 2nd one I found the analysis very honest and convincing. It’ll take 10 minutes of yours but will give you a true picture, at no cost. I had to spend for my research, though. LOL.

Well, I was also surching for "survey online" jobs 7months ago. I even joined to few of survay companies (without paying anything!!!) and up till now did not get any survey to fill in. There is not so many paid surveys in this world, but, there ARE some companies, which do pay for this job...and which have few surveys per day, where one can join for free...But for Americans only, or for the countries who except PayPal...So, no way for me to join them. Ah, cest la vie!

Thanks for very good Hub, is not fair to take money from the people promissing them non-existing jobs...

Thums up, what else.

Man I have a ton of survey sites I do surveys for... and I would never ever ever pay ared cent for a list of survey companies when you can find the list for free online. I Dont recommend anyone paying $49.99 for this list when you can get it for $0.00.

The surveys are also slim and far, but some do pay a decent rate at $5-$20.00 Id never take a 30 minute survey for $1.00. Its a waste of time.

There are also sites that will pay you to test products... you keep the product, get paid... no catch, no costs.

Ill hub about it one day, but my list is long, and today Im rather lazy.

; )

BeatsMe & Lgali: You need all the time in the world to filter useful e-mails from the spam ones, once they start flooding your inbox with mails. OMG the whole thing puts you off after sometime.

Mellasviews: You are right. There are many sites which register you free but some novices get trapped by paying for the same. Regarding the money factor, if you don't opt for $1 surveys, then you don't have many well paid surveys coming your way in a month. Either way you don't earn more than a couple of hundred dollars a month and that too if you are really putting in a lot of time.

As far as product trial is concerned, you can do that if you chose to take that route (as I said in my hub). Choice is yours but I felt that quite cumbersome.

Thx all of you for your time and comments.

I signed up for a free, way to make money online, it was the auto pilot type of software. They wanted $40.00 US to look at a disc that was nothing to do with the auto pilot disc.

The so called Manager, phoned me asking why I hadn't completed the next stage. To which I replied is that the payment for a Disc, to tell me about the next stage. He said no, and was offended, he sent me the next disc free of charge and it was exactly what I expected. This time I called him. He told me it was part of the screening programme his company used to detect, what he described as people that were serious about using his auto pilot software, which he then went on to say a fool could use.

Something wrong there.

Very useful information. Obviously we are all here online trying to get more money! I appreciate the extensive research you did on this.

I used to get quite a few survey offers (SurveySpot comes to mind). I took tons of surveys. I was "too late -- this survey has closed" for several others. Some surveys pissed me off 1/2 way through and I just bailed on. Now that i think of it, I haven't seen any of these offers in my inbox in quite awhile. Oh well, I guess I don't miss them!

anjalichugh, Very Informative hub, well done.

If anyone needs to earn real money, I am afraid completing survey is not the answer.

Granted, I completed a total of 3 surveys a few years back for Surveysavvy.com and I earned a total of $106.00. I must say here that the surveys were technology related and they took me about 25 to 30 minutes each to complete.

This is just one out of hundreds of survey sites that will offer you more than peanuts.

I found out long ago that if you want to earn something substantial through surveys, you must join a consumer panel and be prepared to spend lots of time on your phone or go for panel meetings. So you earn between $50 and $75 for all your efforts.

Anyone hoping to earn good and constant income should look elsewhere.

If however you don’t mind completing surveys as some sort of hobby you can try:

Esearch.com :Their surveys are between 10-15 minutes and most survey opportunities are in the US.

Surveysavvy.com :They have sent me lots of emails requesting me to complete surveys which I honestly could not be bothered to complete. The incentive range was between $5 - $70.

So if you have the patience and the time, you can check them out.

Paying to get access to a survey database is waste of money.

I, like lots of others, spent too much money joining paid survey sites. I, again, get paid a whopping 10p every 10-15 minutes!

There are, every now and again, some perks. My family were invited to join a candy survey and test the products! We were even given £2 for the privilege.

I also do a little bit of mystery shopping in my local area. The pay is, at least, better than online surveys with around £12 for a 20 minute shop.

I recently bought a few ebooks about home businesses. Lo and behold, they wanted me to sell their products for them! Becoming a sales person was not what I had in mind. I think the only useful thing I found was an ebook from someone called Mike Dillard, who has motivated me to join this site and start blogging.

I tried the whole survey thing as well. There's no real money in it. Of course, they fail to tell you in the blurbs as well that if you are outside the US, Canada and the UK the legitimate survey companies you can sign up with are very limited. Your chances of making their payout thresholds are minimal, and the companies set it up that way so you'll lose patience before they have to pay out. You are so much better off using your time on more productive activities. I'm just so glad I didn't pay for my list, and furthermore, used a new, different email addy because that particular addy is now  just a spam folder.

anjalichugh profile image

Hovalis: We are on the same page. I too set up a separate e-mail Id which still gets filled up with nearly 500 emails every day. You're absolutely right in saying that no one reaches the payout threshold and one gives up before that stage. That's where these companies make money. The advertisers pay them money which they never have to pass on to anyone. That's what is called unjust enrichment.

Wow - a lot of response to this and I am impressed that you have responded back to each one, anjalichugh!

I was talking to my friend about this today and I told him my experience with surveys was not very good, there may be one or two legit companies out there (like Survey Savvy perhaps) but for the most part, surveys don't pay you enough to justify your time, and certainly don't pay to join a survey company. I have done that before and it was not worthwhile for me at all. If it is free to join, all you are spending is your time. It may be one way for newbies on the internet to start out, but I don't want people to have a negative stereotype of everything online being a scam...so be careful where you spend your time, and get recommendations from people you trust before wasting your time!

I was employed by Luth Research for 3 years. They are survey savvy's parent company, and they are truly the best online survey company out there. I have seen the amount of money the top earners make at survey savvy by completing surveys and referrals. You would have to pinch yourself to make sure you were not dreaming. I saw a respondent who earned $70,000.00 in a year. there are others who have made 20-30-40 thousand. This is through a vigorous referral system, links, and websites with links. These amounts are definitely not the norm and your results will vary depending on your ability and time. This is a San Diego based company with a female owned and operated work force.(lots of hormones flying around) I have completed a few surveys after parting ways with this company. They are also a very nice focus group company and they pay anywhere from $50.00 to $250.00 for 1 to 2 hours of your time. If you would like to read about a real money making opportunity that involves your computer and a few trips to different business's check out my post at crulf8. It will be complete tomorrow.

LelahKimball: Yes Lelah you're right. There are already comments posted on this hub where readers have shared their experience with legit survey companies as well. As I have already pointed out in my hub and in reply to various comments (herein above) that I deliberately posted Survey Savvy video as it speaks good of this company. What I tried to highlight was that the majority of companies pay peanuts and people don't even reach the payout threshold as they get bored much before that stage. Money is a great motivational factor and no one gets motivated by earning $0.50 - $1.0 on an average for a survey. As you said, there are survey companies which might be paying good amount to the survey takers but the point is ..1)how & where to identify such companies and 2)how much you can realistically earn in a month, considering all the factors which have already been discussed in here.

Thx very much for your comments.

I joined a bunch of different survey sites a while back. I quickly realized what ones were a waste of time and stopped doing them. But, their are a few good ones out there. You will not get rich like they say. I have gotten a few gift cards and and a few checks from some. I found the best way to use them is to actually refer other people to the ones I liked and then get a small commission from it. I only bother to do the surveys when I am already online and can do them while looking at other websites and checking email. E-Rewards added up very quickly but their prizes stink. Mypoints, Survey Savy, My2cents, Cashcrate and Inbox Dollars are the ones I use. With Inbox Dollars you can shop at lots of different sites. If you go through their link you can make a little bit of the money you spend back.

jim10: Yep! With 'Inbox Dollars', getting 50 cents for a survey and 2-5 cents for a paid e-mail, you really need to have a lot of patience for reaching $ 10 or $25 payout stage. I know what you're saying but speaking for myself, I thought it was worthwhile to spend those 15-20 min in some other work. Whatever said and done I don't think one can earn more than 100-200 dollars a month from these surveys and that too if you are seriously involved.

Thx for sharing your experience.

I have joined earlier 5 or 6 paid surveys and reading paid emails programs. Problem is that they send you mail initially, but later it becomes very slow, after some days you get only one email/ survery per week which is not enough to make money.

Yes, it is possible to make money through it but it will take according to me two or 3 years after joining the program to get your first cheque.

I had a passing interest in this (just to for the knowledge -- not to make money). Your hub helped me understand how things worked. Now, if anybody asks me about making money doing online surveys, I'll be better equipped to talk to them about it.

This was very informative. I think (for me) it boils down to how do I want to spend my time, what is the best use of it.

Thanks for your wisdom and insight!

I was having doubts about survey websites because my email was always spammed with about 30 affiliate emails per day. I had to use fake email addresses to see which websites were real and which were fake. Now that I have viewed your hub and videos, I have signed up for survey savvy and so far, I haven't received any spam mail, and I want to thank you for the time and effort put into this hub.

Frustrations are not a factor in my survey taking anymore. Since I spend most of my time in front of a laptop computer (Lol) everyday due to college, I figure, why not make money online Lol. Thanks :-)

Thank you so much for this hub - it should be required reading for anyone who is surfing the internet for the first time looking for 'work at home opportunities'. I looked at the survey companies also but as soon as I realized that I would have to 'complete' offers at a cost to me I stopped researching this. I have a few email accounts and to avoid unwanted spam I use one of them for research and stuff like this. That way my 'real' email doesn't get inundated with spam from my mistakes! Thank you again for the info and research!

When I saw your Hub title I thought you were just another affiliate of this online con.

I tried this once, and like you earnt about $1 every 20 minutes. Two surveys did it for me, and then I quit.

The only people making money are the affiliates selling the lists.

Great Hub.

anjalichugh,

Your article was a very true representation of the survey business. When I retired I was looking for a way to make a few bucks and tried the survey thing. It went just as you described until I finally spammed them enough they quit sending me stuff.

About 10 days ago I read a post on one of the forums about a company called A.W. Surveys which was supposed to be the real deal. I went for it and things were great to start. They were paying $4.00 each time you reviewed 2 websites. This was fun and I did the 5 they offed plus a different one. Long story short it added up to $27.00 for a couple of hours of work that was actually fun.

The problem is that there hasn't been any other offers and the cash out amount is $75. I don't know what they do with these surveys I did but if they sell them, then this looks like a scam because I didn't get paid and probably never will because I'll give up before I reach the $75.00.

The only thing they are offering now to make money is $1.25 for a referral. This appears to be a pretty sleazy way of making you bother your friends to try to get to the $75. I should have known better.

The only 'make money' surveys I did online were to get frequent flier miles through programs like emiles (I think that's what it's called?). In the end I concluded the same thing as you - they just weren't worth the effort.

What I dislike the most is that you have to give your personal information like address, phone, credit card numbers and goes on and on. All for what? maybe a $1 or $2?

Gino: Exactly. That's an added menace. Your mail box gets overloaded and phone keeps ringing throughout the day.

What a great hub. All I ever really got was alot of spam right after I joined and surveys that paid a dollar. I did pay $39 to get on the list. About a year later I did get two offers for a group session that would pay $150. But I would have had to travel and it wasn't worth it so I cancelled. Its almost a crime they way they promote and promise real money. Also watch out for costly informational products The best ones really tend to be around$27. Then there is a more expensive one time offer that sucks you in to buy a $97 product. Resist the great copywriting that sucks you in.Its written by professionals!! Beware

Zgailgoodman: You're absolutely right but as I stated in my earlier posts that one gets to know (most of the times) about these scams only after wasting hard earned money. I think that's how these companies make their killing. I'm sure you'll be careful in future the way I'm now. lol. Take care.

I've been making good money with survey savvy. They send me 3 - 10 surveys a day (once you update your profile they start flowing in)

Most of the surveys are $3 each and take about 10 mins. The key is that the more surveys you take, the more they send. They like to send them to active users to make sure they are quickly turned around.

Veronica: You're right. That's why I mentioned Survey Savy as a sincere pay master. The only question (as I stated earlier) is 'what is your level of expectation and satisfaction'. This hub was especially intended for those who had an idea of making a good amount of money every month through these surveys. At least now most of them know what they are going in for. Thx for visiting.

chouchou: Yes they are.. but how much ....depends on how much time you are willing to spend and how much is the money you are receiving. Is it proportionate to the time spent? Thx for stopping by.
