When you like a Web page that you have come across with, you naturally save it on your browser tool bar or folder. But that was before social bookmarking at least. Now, you get to save and manage your bookmarks by utilizing a social bookmarking platform in the likes of Digg, Propeller, StumbleUpon, and Del.icio.us.

Managing your bookmarks includes determining the ones you should keep private and the ones that you can share with the public. However, if you are a blogger or a website owner, you would choose to make them public. It is because as a website owner, it is but natural that you bookmark your own Web pages.

It is important how and when to submit the URLs of your Web pages to the bookmarking sites, though. You just cannot submit hundreds of pages of your website in just one sitting. Otherwise, you will be flagged as a spammer, and that is the least thing that you would want to happen to you. Your account may be deleted or your IP address may even be banned from the bookmarking sites that you have registered with.

You may submit one or two links to your blog entries or Web pages in a day, but be sure to submit them to several major bookmarking sites so that you can have more backlinks. Make use of automated social bookmarking services such as OnlyWire and SocialMarker to make the submission easier and faster. You may also ask your friends and family members to bookmark your pages, thus creating more exposure for your site.

It is also important that you establish your credibility as a social bookmarker. This means that you are not just there for online marketing reasons, but you are also there to be a part of the community. Take note that social bookmarking is supposed to be an interactive activity. So, it is important that you engage in your bookmarking community's other activities: add friends, bookmark other websites, rate and comment on other submissions, and join in forum discussions. While participating in them strengthens your credibility as a social bookmarker, it also creates more exposure for you and your website.

As you can see, your bookmarks can benefit you as long as you have to manage them properly. There are no hard and fast rules on how to do it, really. But some guide and a little knowledge may do the trick for you.
