Small Business Marketing
Marketing a small business online is about bringing your offline business to the front of new business trends. We are in a phase where if you are not online with your small business you are not in business.
In these changing times we are seeing people use the internet for all their needs especially the younger generation. We are seeing newspapers go under and the yellow pages and the phone directory will become a thing of the past. People of all ages are just “Googling it” and away they go.
How people gather their information about small businesses online is through several avenues that are offered on the internet. All you need to do is to be sure that your small business info is out there.
Small Business Information Techniques
Here are some small business internet marketing techniques that will help your traditional business stand out in your market.
1. Have a website for your small business. Putting together a website is much easier than in the past. You may create a free site or a low cost site. I recommend spending the money to have a highly targeted and professional looking site.
2. Have a business blog. Keep your customers informed about upcoming changes in your industry; provide them with information about new techniques or tools of the trade. Blogging has become one of the greatest tools for providing customers with information. A great way to invite them into your store and direct them to your website.
3. If you are offering the ability to purchase something off your website, be sure that you are set up with an e-commerce shopping cart.
4. Have a contact page on either of your sites. Make sure that you are accessible to your customer. An email, or 800 number along with your regular number are very helpful.
Having a strategy in how you can get out in front of your customer is just the first step. You will want to know how to drive people to your sites, so that you will be able to provide a larger group with your information. Ultimately, growing your business.
Small Business Marketing Strategies
Small business marketing strategies for driving people to your sites can be done in a couple of ways. We have discussed blogging and how it becomes your hub of information. Other ways to direct traffic is through social sites and writing content outside of your website and or blog.
Here are some ideas to consider in your marketing strategy:
1. Consider social networking sites. Although these sites to take some time and effort on your part, it is well worth it. You will want to create a Twitter account, a Facebook account, and a YouTube account. Your probably wondering about the YouTube account. Video is extremely powerful in promoting your business. If you have a cooking class or a DIY class, tape it and submit it.
2. Creating content about your business and what it offers. You can do this through writing to several free sites, such as Squidoo.com, HubPages.com, EzineArticles, com. If you find that this is too time consuming for you, you may outsource your content writing to a freelance writer, such as Elance.
3. Having a monthly or weekly newsletter. This is something that you can do through an autoresponder, this is a system that will send out your newsletter in a timely manner for you. All you need are e-mail addresses. You can also do direct mailings with your newsletter. People really do still like mail.
4. Advertise through Google adwords using PayPerClick. Before doing this be sure to study up on the best practices for PPC. Also, have a budget identified for this form of advertising. Having a keen knowledge base on PPC and having a budget will help from spending too much money and will alleviate tons of frustration.
Marketing your small business online can truly be a rewarding journey. It does take time to set up and for most businesses time online takes away from what needs to be done offline. If this is the case, consider having one person in your organization responsible for the implementation of the campaign.
Also, do one thing at a time and finish it, especially in creating your blog or website. Yes you don’t have to have both but when put together it is very powerful.
When using your social sites, remember that you need to touch basis at least once a day, more if you can. They are very interactive but again very powerful. When you are in the social sites provide tons of information and beware not to “pitch” your business too much.

Angela,
Great article. I agree with you and Dotty. Small offline businesses need to use internet marketing as an inexpensive and effective way to market their businesses.
I feel that your suggestions are exactly right. I like to use my blog as the central hub. Search engines seem to like blogs since they are always being updated.
I then like to drive traffic to my blog using article writing and the social media sites.
Thanks, Angela.
