Master Chief

Every game or story needs a protagonist, a good guy, and Master Chief Petty Officer John 117 fills this function admirable in the Halo series. This popular Xbox action adventure first-person shooter game was created by the geniuses at Bungie Studios and has been a hit since it first came out in 2001. Master Chief has appeared in Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 2 and Halo 3. He is also a character in the associated novels and comic books inspired by the Halo series.

John’s life began uneventfully enough in 2511; as a child he was the typical tousle-haired, gap-toothed, freckled adventurer that remembers his mother as a kind woman who smelled like soap. When he was six years old, however, the heads of the SPARTAN-II Program visited his world, Eridanus II, on a scouting mission. They were impressed with his competitive spirit, unusual height, quick reflexes and physical prowess. He was kidnapped along with 74 other children, replaced with clones that would later die of natural causes, leaving the abductions undiscovered.

During the next eight years John was trained in history, military strategy, weapons and physical fitness. His fierce loyalty to his comrades led him to directly disobey orders on his first training mission at age eight, in which he left no one behind and disabled a company of marines masquerading as guards of the shipment the boys were sent to commandeer. At 14, John and the other trainees underwent physical augmentation to endow them with enhanced eyesight, strength, reflexes and bones so strong it was nearly impossible to break them. Half of the subjects died or were disabled by the process.

John’s first official mission against the Covenant resulted in the loss of his friend Sam but he found they could be beaten. In a never-ending battle against the forces that would destroy his kind, John became a fierce warrior who never gives up. Similar to Clint Eastwood characters, John is a man of few words. In fact, he never speaks during the player controlled game play and is very quiet even in between scenes. He’s so quiet that it’s easy for the player to immerse themselves in the character.

Calm and cynical, with a wry sense of humor, John intimidates both friends and enemies by his towering height (7’) and full body armor. While his foes fear him they also give him a respect tinged with terror. Master Chief John 117 has served more than 30 years active duty, is one of the most decorated soldiers in United Nations Space Command and has earned every medal that exists except POW Medallion. He is also known as Spartan, Demon, Master Chief, Reclaimer and Chief.

At some point, the explanatory dialogue in the Halo games became overbearing, and though Gameloft has come up with a storyline, it often lets you hear the details with voice samples while you’re playing, or briefly interrupts to show you a new area, rather than stopping the action for minutes at a time to advance the plot.
