The Master Cleanse is pretty simple. It consists of two essential pieces - the lemonade drink and the salt water flush. In order to get the complete benefits of the Master Cleanse fast you want to follow the Master Cleanse recipe exactly and do the cleanse for at least 10 days.

I also recommend that if you want fo follow the most accurate directions, that you get yourself a copy of the book, The Master Cleanser, by Stanley Burroughs, before you do anything.

As I mentioned, there are really two different recipes for the Master Cleanse. So in this article I'm going to explain how to make the lemonade drink. This is going to sustain you over the course of your fast. You should drink it whenever you feel even just a little bit hungry or thirsty. Don't worry about how much you drink.

Just make sure you drink plenty of it because you also want to keep hydrated. The lemonade drink is an important part of the cleanse so don't feel like you are doing better by having less of it.

Ingredients for the Master Cleanse recipe

Here's what you need to start. Gather all of these ingredients together:

  • Water - Filtered or Spring Water
  • Lemons (roughly 20 for one week)
  • Maple Syrup
  • Sea Salt
  • Cayenne Pepper

When I shop, I usually try to get organic ingredients when I can. If I'm going to detox, I'm going to do it right and try and avoid putting chemicals in my body. Organic maple syrup is easy enough to find. Actually, this is probably the easiest ingredient to find in an organic versions. Lemons should be okay depending on the time of year. The cayenne pepper may be a bit tough, but try a health food store or someplace like Whole Foods. If you can't find organic though, don't worry about it too much.

When shopping for the maple syrup for the Master Cleanse diet recipe, it needs to be REAL maple syrup. Not a maple-flavored syrup. Flavored syrups will have lots of additional sugar added and it won't give you the health benefits of real maple syrup. It won't taste as good either. This is really important if you are doing the Master Cleanse for weight loss as well. All that corn syrup that goes into pancake syrups is just not going to help you lose weight at all.

For water, I always get bottled water for the duration of the Lemonade diet cleanse. Use spring water or purified, your preference. I personally like Dasani purified water best, but whatever you like is fine. If you have a water filter on your tap, just use that. It will save you money and it isn't any different than the purified water you get in bottles.

The Lemonade Drink Recipe

Once you have everthing you can make up your lemonade drink.

I usually fill up a 32 ounce container for 3 servings:

  • 24 ounces cold water
  • 3 ounces fresh squeezed lemon juice
  • 3 ounces of maple syrup
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper

For more servings, just double or triple this recipe accordingly. I like to mix up a batch for the day and since I don't want to try and lift enormous containers out of my fridge, I will just mix 32 ounce batches. Usually I'll mix up two in the morning and then maybe anothe one when I get home later.

The taste of the Master Cleanse Lemonade drink is pretty sweet with a bit of a kick in the aftertaste because of the cayenne pepper. My recommendation is to experiment with how much pepper is appropriate. If you find even a 1/4 tsp too much, cut back. To make the drink more palatable in general, I always pour it over ice made from filtered water. If you wanted to, you could probably try blending it with some ice to make something like a slushie - just for a little variety.

lots of detox recipes out there. which is best?

I like the fruit detox. I just go on a no white or any type of flour binge for a week. Needless to say red meat & fried foods are already cut out pretty much.

I frequently cut all the white flour too, but I find I never last as long as I would like. I love bread :)
