Menopause and hair loss do in fact have a relation to each other. Hair loss is one of the many symptoms or complications that can arise from the fluctuations of hormones in your body. If you are going through menopause, your body has changed considerably and probably will continue to do so over the next few years. During that time, your body stops producing the level of estrogen that it normally would. This decrease in hormone levels causes many things to happen in your body and hair loss can be one of those things that happen. For some people, unwanted hair growth is also a common side effect of menopause and can be just as troublesome as hair loss.

Hair loss that is drastic or that is significant should be reported to your doctor. This type of hair loss is simply not normal and should be reported to your doctor to insure that you are not suffering from a drastically low hormone level. But, if you are losing just slightly more hair than you normally would, this could be a sign of menopause. Hair loss is not the only thing that should be evident though. Menopause is characterized by loss of hair that is coupled with other menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, mood swings and the cessation of menstruation.

If you find yourself losing hair, talk to your doctor about a hormone replacement therapy program. By providing you with additional hormones that mimic the actions of those that your body is not producing enough of, your body can be regulated and symptoms like hair loss can be lessened, considerably. Your doctor will be able to help determine where your hormone levels are and improve your condition to the point of bringing you some relief and improving your chances of stopping the loss of hair.
