Seeing menopause as a positive change

You are probably wondering how menopause could ever be described as a positive change in your life. The fact that you are reading this means you do believe it or would like to believe it. Believe me when I tell you it can be a very positive change.

When we were young and just starting puberty, we had to endure menstruation. It was dreaded each month and we gave it names such as “our friend” or “my period” or “the curse”. Once we got used to it, we led full meaningful lives giving birth and raising a family.

Having our periods was something that we just didn’t think about or dwell on anymore. As we got older, menopause became the dreaded thing, due in large to our parents attitudes about it and society in general. That is no longer the case. Thanks to all the education on menopause, we now know it can change our lives in a positive way.

If we’re lucky, we are all so busy raising our families that we don’t have time to think of ourselves until our children are adults and no longer living at home. This is usually the time we hit menopause age.

Mood swings and hot flashes have always been a major concern for women going through menopause. Seeking proper medical care is the start to getting through these concerns. Once the hormones “settle” down in your body, you will start to feel like you did when you were a young girl.

The important things to remember:

  • Get plenty of rest
  • Eat healthy
  • Exercise daily
  • Stay active socially
  • Do not ever be ashamed of menopause

If you keep these facts in mind, you will be on your way to the most meaningful life you could imagine. No longer will the worry of pregnancy be there for you and your partner. This, in itself, will make your sex life much more desirable for both of you. Over 65% of postmenopausal women say their sex life is better than it ever was before. Many women feel a ‘closeness’ with their partner that they didn’t always experience prior to menopause.

It has been noted by doctors that the more negative feelings a woman has prior to menopause, the harder it is on her when she is actually going through menopause. There has always been so much emphasis on positive thinking - now is the time to prove its validity. We have choices and you can choose to have a full, active and happy life. In some cultures, menopause is celebrated as a joyous event. It can be for you, too.

I read something that I would like to share with you and it is so true:

A pre-adolescent girl is a flower, a woman in her childbearing years is the fruit, and a post-menopausal woman is the seed….she contains the essence of all the preceding life-experiences, which she can plant in upcoming generations.

I couldn’t have said it better myself. Please check out my menopause help and support site for a lot more info about menopause support.

So great to read a positive take on the menopause. I particularly liked your quote, "A pre-adolescent girl is a flower, a woman in her childbearing years is the fruit, and a post-menopausal woman is the seed….she contains the essence of all the preceding life-experiences, which she can plant in upcoming generations." What a lovely thought. I'd like to link to this hub on my own menopause related hubs. Hope that's ok with you.
