men's fashion and style: haircut/hairstyle 101
80Getting a haircut or having your hair restyled is a serious business. You may not know it, but your hair is your crowning glory. Okay, so it's probably not the newest adage you have heard in your neighbourhood but the fact that it's still used as a style mantra in salons everywhere and as an advertising lure line by the manufacturers of the shampoo you use, makes it a universal truth. So what are you going to do about it? But before you say goodbye to the man who has been facing you in the mirror for a long time now, here are several tips to consider before you march to the nearest barber shop or salon humming "time for, a cool change" (Cool Change, Little River Band).
know what you want
Going to the barber shop or salon with no idea on what you want them to do with your hair is a disaster waiting to happen. So before you rush into a potential landmine, grab a GQ or any style mag and look for the look you want. If you don't want to bring the mag with you, limit your selection to pictures of hairstyles worn by celebrities - chances are, the barber or stylist would know the cut or style. Another thing, be realistic.
looking for mr barber
If you have no idea which barbershop or salon to go to, ask your friends for recommendations. But if most of your friends have the same hair problems as you do, casually ask any man you think has a great haircut and ask him where he got it from. If you have finally decided on one, make sure to make an appointment to avoid waiting time or rushing the barber/stylist.
pros and cons
Once you're there, discuss thoroughly with the barber/stylist. Make him analyse if the look you settled for will suit you physically, or is doable, or if your hair type is the right type for that particular cut. If it's a no go, ask for recommendations. They usually have catalogues of the latest trends in hairstyles from which you could choose from. After you have made your choice, again, discuss the pros and cons. And remember to be kind for kindness begets kindness and it's your hair that's going to go under HIS scissors. And what better way to show it than by tipping well? A happy barber/stylist is an honest barber/stylist. A good, healthy interpersonal relationship equals good results. Moreover, you'll know where to run to if you need a new do.
follow through
After the cut/style is achieved asked your barber/stylist for possible styles that can be done with your new do (this only works for styles that are neither a crewcut nor a buzz). And while you're at it, ask for tips on grooming and haircare. Hair care and grooming is their business so they would probably know the right shampoo/conditioner/gel/wax to use for your hair type and new hairstyle.
a word to the wise
So now you're all set. A word to the wise though, you can either go for the extreme change or stay on the safe side. It all boils down on how ready you are and how much you want it. A haircut could totally alter people's perception of you, for better or worse, but it could also enhance the way you look in a way that you thought was not totally possible. But personally, I say go for it.

last word: gel vs wax
There are several differences between hairgel and wax (or gum, or putty, or paste) other than the obvious. While hairgels create a sleeker glossy (or wet) look, wax and the others in its family tree provide a matted, more natural-looking finish. Although both can work in any length of hair, wax is more ideal for longish hair because it allows stonger hold while the hairgel loses its strength at a certain length (longer than 4in).
For a better result, use your gel or wax after you shower applying from the nape up then blowdry (if you have one) in place. For a more textured look, use your fingers for teasing and styling. You may also use a comb for permed hair - with bigger gaps between each tooth.
When buying gel or wax, choose those that do not leave flakes when your hair dries and can easily be washed off with water alone. And if you use perfume or cologne, go for the unscented variant.

LOL next time you need a buzz, head on to the barber shop or salon so you won't be worrying about your clippers - they would with theirs! :D
Gel is definitely better...
All these guys have great looking styles - well, except for Justin. A buzz-cut is not a style. I'm never happy with my hair (nope, not losing it) no matter what cut I get. It just lays there flat even if I use "Instant Freeze" gel, and I refuse to use hair spray on it. So, I typically wear a hat.
you mean a cap... there is a difference. AND this is NOT poem, lest you be lost :D
Sounds like there is a lot to consider. Until I saw my brother get ready I thought women took the longest with their hair. Nope! At least not in my family. My brother will spend over an hour making sure his lines are PERFECT and his beard is PERFECT. But, hey, to each hair own...ha ha get it? Hair..her...Okay, I know I'm a Dork. Anyway, I'm diggin' the Justin flic. I dunno about that office boy and, uh, Mr. Bacstreet boy.
Yeah I dug it! Cut your brother some slack, your ladies want your men looking perfect don't you. He just probably wants some lady happy with the way he looks :D And I totally relate to your brother! LOL
Nice!
Thanks for dropping a line :D
Nice hub! More than that, I like to drink coffee and smoke cigarette.
Wait I'm coming with you! LOL thanks for dropping by :D
I can tell you're a hottie just by the fact that you were man enough to own up to this, and aid those that wear caps.
All those guys are smokin'...would Tom Cruise be hot with Bret Michaels' hair? Would Zac Efron be hot with Justin Timberlake's hair? I think not.
This is awesome:) You're a stud. Peace out.
I also meant to say (after the part about celebrities with different do's) that it's great that you wrote this to give other men new ideas. Don't you agree that most men like to keep their hairstyles the same throughout their entire lives? At least that's what I've noticed. But I live in hick-ville so maybe we're a little diff'rent up here....:) I think it's totally sexy that you men were commenting back and forth about this too. I don't know too many men that would do that. But I'm a tad sheltered.
Good job:)
Thanks for dropping by MissJamie. And I appreciate the kudos. Yeah, us men should kick it up a notch to keep up with you ladies. Thanks :D
Hi cris, I like your hub and writing style, Very attractive and verity of topics.
Thanks for the nice comment ajayrjha. :D
can u recommend a hair cut for me
Great hub! I'm a wax user. The cool thing about wax is if you don't wash your hair the next day, the wax is still there! Plus, like you mentioned, it works better with long hair. I've also noticed that wax withstands the rain, whereas gel runs out of your hair in the rain!
Yes, I much prefer wax too, particularly the water-based variety - it washes off quite easily. And gel does provide some sheen to the hair and I want it natural looking. :D
oh my you like the water based variety....... well another interesting hub, working my way through all my fans hubs tonight, do you have to write so many....... you seem a very diverse character, is that the right word
Okay, so that explains why you have been all over my old hubs! LOL
Anyway, I write when I feel like writing. I guess for me, variety is the name of the game! :D
Hey thanks for getting some cool hairstyles all in one place !! I have three sons , the almost 18 yr old wants to dye his hair green lol( I dont mind) it will grow out and way worse things could happen. Geez, I didn't know men's hair could be so complicated! I have been shaving my head for over twenty years! My only dilema is choosing a set of clippers that will out last the previous pair. Great Hub though!
