Mens and Womens Fleece Scarfs
When the weather outside turns cold, nothing is more warm and comfortable than fleece.
It was first used mainly in outerwear, but today you can find all sorts of apparel made of this fabulous fabric. Even an item such as a fleece neck scarf is now so attractive that they can be worn as an accessory all day. Here are some interesting facts about this super soft material.
What is Fleece?
Fleece is a manmade knit fabric with a moisture resistant pile. Synthetic fibers are knitted together, then brushed and finally sheered to give it its trademark soft feel. It gets its name from the fur that is sheared from animals such as sheep to make natural wool fabrics.
It has the same warming properties of its natural counterparts, but is typically much lighter and much less bulky. The manmade version also breathes better and does not hold much moisture. Also, because it is completely synthetic, it can be produced in a wider variety of colors, patterns, and thicknesses. Some is even made entirely of recycled plastic bottles making it a very “green” fabric choice.
Types of Fleece
One of the most popular types of this fabric is known as microfleece. Polar Fleece is one of the most well known brands of this type. Many outerwear garments such as a fleece scarf and or coat are made from this type because it provides maximum warmth with little weight or stiffness.
Fleece is also found in a variety of other weights all of which are water repellent by design. Heavier versions do tend to pill more readily, but with high end types pilling is minimal regardless of the thickness. As mentioned before, fleece material is sheered before being sew into garments. This process can create a fabric with a very short pile or a very deep pile. Patterns and textures can also be formed in the fabric during this process. Most people think of a smooth surface when they think of fleece, but some varieties actually curl the ends of the pile for a totally different look and feel.
Berber fleece, Sherpa, and Sherling all use a version of this technique and can make a beautiful and interesting garment such as a fleece scarf or hat. Plush fleece is the variety that does have a soft, smooth surface. Some types are also double sided meaning that it is “fuzzy” on both sides of the fabric which adds to its warmth and comfort.
Care and Maintenance of Fleece
The early versions of this material were very easy to tear and damage. They also were difficult to launder properly. Today there are quality varieties that are extremely tough and durable and can even be machine washed. To check to see if the material you are purchasing is high quality, (which is especially important for an item that will receive a lot of handling like a fleece scarf or gloves) pull on the fabric and see what happens.
High quality varieties will return to their original shape very quickly. Also look at how dense the fabric is by making sure you cannot see the backing of the material easily through the pile. Typically, the denser the pile the higher the quality. Most garments such as a fleece scarf or sweater can be machine washed with a mild detergent. Stay away from bleach and fabric softeners. Also this fabric should never be exposed to heat, so always air dry and never use a hot iron.

- Gorgeous Shawls... and Their Trends
A little history about one of the favorite fashion accessories... the shawl Unfortunately the origin of shawls cannot be pinpointed to one culture or time period. However, it is known they've been around for many centuries. Originally, they were created to provide additional warmth for people who lived in cold areas. People of all income levels owned them. Over time, they became more and more intricate in design and quickly were considered to be precious gifts and belongings. They were collected and bought by kings and queens in many cultures. As weaving technology advanced, the designs became very intricate and many were regarded as works of art. The origination of the term shawl is Persian. The original word, “shal”, meant a woolen garment. However, shawls do now come in a variety of fabrics and styles. Shawls were mentioned in a variety of historical documents. They were usually recorded in documents describing an emperor or king's appearance. Traditionally, both men and women wore shawls. They were originally woven as part of the wool garment weaving process of other garments. Later, new techniques were developed specifically for making shawls. There were techniques developed to weave them in a very fine, intricate manner. As the centuries passed, shawl making moved into different cultures including China. Chinese shawls were made of silk and many other fabrics besides just wool. Traditionally, Chinese garments were woven in a variety of colors and patterns, and some were even embroidered to create specific designs. There were even pieces that were designed specifically for certain religious ceremonies. These shawls were sacred and not worn as an every day garment. In the early 19th century, shawl creation moved into America where techniques were developed to mass-produce replica shawls. Before this time, each piece was individually woven. Every piece was unique in its own way. However, thanks to the industrial revolution, companies were able to create hundreds of identical shawls in just a few hours time. With this development, beautiful shawls were made available at affordable rates for everyone. You can now find shawls in just about every fabric and pattern possible. Today, shawls can be found in just about every clothing store around the world. There are still specific varieties that are higher quality—and of course, higher priced. These would be shawls made of high-end materials like cashmere or silk or versions that are still completely handcrafted by skilled artisans. You can also still find one-of-a-kind silk and satin shawls in some high end collections of major designers. Shawl trends have also evolved and changed throughout the years. In some decades, the trend points towards elegant pieces, while in recent years, they have been more popular with the young adults who want a more bohemian flair. While the prices, styles, and trends may change throughout the decades and centuries, one thing remains the same. Shawls are always in style with one group or the other. They are always a great way to show off your fashion sense and personality. Everyone should have at least a couple types in their closet. You never know when they might be just the thing you need for to finish off your outfit. - 8 months ago
