From Alfred Nobel's will
"The whole of my remaining realizable estate shall be dealt with in the following way: the capital, invested in safe securities by my executors, shall constitute a fund, the interest on which shall be annually distributed in the form of prizes to those who, during the preceding year, shall have conferred the greatest benefit on mankind. The said interest shall be divided into five equal parts, which shall be apportioned as follows: one part to the person who shall have made the most important discovery or invention within the field of physics; one part to the person who shall have made the most important chemical discovery or improvement; one part to the person who shall have made the most important discovery within the domain of physiology or medicine; one part to the person who shall have produced in the field of literature the most outstanding work in an ideal direction; and one part to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses. The prizes for physics and chemistry shall be awarded by the Swedish Academy of Sciences; that for physiology or medical works by the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm; that for literature by the Academy in Stockholm, and that for champions of peace by a committee of five persons to be elected by the Norwegian Storting. It is my express wish that in awarding the prizes no consideration be given to the nationality of the candidates, but that the most worthy shall receive the prize, whether he be Scandinavian or not." Mr. Obama is in my thoughts
Chuckle I did when Oliver North brought a book he authored to Huckabee, the FOX television program hosted by Mike Huckabee yesterday, and quipped something like, “Guess I can‘t get a Nobel Prize for Literature since I already wrote the book.” Chuckle? Man, I‘m still laughing 24 hours later. It’s the line I’ll laugh at the next time I feel obligated to laugh at a joke I don’t like or don’t understand.

Alfred Nobel

It’s been 103 years since the cremation of Alfred Nobel, the scientist, inventor, entrepreneur, author and pacifist. He is too much of a gentleman to do what he should if it were even possible: Rise from his ashes like the mythical phoenix, brush himself off and give each member of The Norwegian Nobel Committee, the group of five who select the Nobel Peace Prize Laureates, a tongue lashing the likes of which earthly inhabitants have never heard or could imagine.

The Rules
We should feel safe assuming Mr. Nobel’s will spells out the rules The Norwegian Nobel Committee is obligated to follow. As I read the phrase, during the preceding year, shall have conferred the greatest benefit on mankind, methinks something is wrong.

If the Committee believes it doesn’t deserve a harsh reprimand, then it should respond to these statements:

  • Explain how Barack Obama’s presidential campaigning during 2008 meets the portion of the criteria which states, “shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses”
  • Explain how you were intimidated or otherwise influenced in any way that a reasonable and objective person would interpret as improper with respect to Mr. Nobel’s wishes as stated in his will published at Nobelprize.org.

Speculation
One does not have to stretch his or her imagination to view Mr. Obama’s receiving the award with a great deal of skepticism. There have been enough happenings with Mr. Obama to justify viewing much of what comes about during his term or terms as our president with raised eyebrows. Some (in percentage, I don’t know how many) of us question his:

  • birth location,
  • Reason(s) for not disclosing school documents,
  • involvement with ACORN,
  • broken transparency pledge,
  • reason for putting off a decision about General McChyrstal’s troop request when he seems hell-bent on winning with projects that have no relationship to world peace and
  • associations with seemingly anti-Americans such as Jeremiah Wright, Bill Ayers, Van Jones and Mark Lloyd.

These kinds of negatives give rise for fair-minded people to rightly wonder what might have really played a role in Mr. Obama receiving the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize.

Obama's kind of transparency
The names of the nominees and other information about the nominations cannot be revealed for fifty years, giving wrongdoers comfort until sometime in 2059. By then, those involved in Mr. Obama’s selection by hook or crook will be long gone. Out of the woods, like they say.

Sounds like a perfect setup for Mr. Obama, a person I perceive as a perfect politician. I don’t say that as a compliment.
