An invaluable software package for businesses

Don't scoff! Microsoft Office is an integrated software package put out by the same company which brought us Windows, if you couldn't tell from the software name.

What sets this software suite apart from others is the spiderwebbed connection between each separate program. Files created in one part of Microsoft Office can be transferred to another for further editing or analysis.

Though this article will go further in depth on the programs in this suite, here is a brief list of them.

  • Microsoft Word
  • Microsoft Outlook
  • Microsoft PowerPoint
  • Microsoft Excel

The listed programs are the most frequently used programs from this suite in the business world. While there are other programs which fall under the umbrella of Microsoft Office, they are not as common.

Microsoft Outlook

Outlook is the email function of the Office suite. Using Outlook you can maintain a thorough address book, easily arrange a meeting with the program's calendar resources, and archive important emails with no worries of reaching maximum capacity in your inbox or emails disappearing because the provider deletes them without your permission.

When setting up Outlook, you can also have email from other providers diverted to your Outlook account. Another great feature is the ability to set rules for incoming mail, which allows you to sort your email into folders before you even look at them.

Outlook is one of the most common e-mail programs used by companies and corporations, and thanks to it's easy interface and simple but powerful tools, it's no surprise.

Microsoft Word

Microsoft Word is a document creation program. In the slideshow above you see a detailed explanation of the anatomy of your Word interface. Within this program you are able to create text documents, insert clipart and other images, and import templates of various document types.

Memorandums, reports, and technical documents can be prepared in this program with ease and efficiency. Templates for numerous technical and business documents are available online for little to no cost to the user.

Like the rest of the Office sweet, elements from other programs are compatible with Word. Portions of Excel spreadsheets, graphics made in Visio, customer data from Accountant, these are just some of the things you can insert into a Word document.

Microsoft Excel

Another extremely powerful program within the Office suite, Excel is a spreadsheet utility. As with the rest of the Office software package, Excel allows for complete integration with the other programs, so a spreadsheet created in Excel could be seamlessly added to PowerPoint, emails in Outlook, even as a table in Word documents.

Excel incorporates another valued tool into it's programming. By using formulas, a spreadsheet can be processed, organized, or analyzed in nearly limitless ways. The code can be programmed using Visual Basic for Applications, and this programming is treated as an interface of the spreadsheet.

Microsoft PowerPoint

Aptly named, Microsoft Powerpoint is a slideshow creation program. This program creates professional presentations with sound, moving graphics and text. Each slide has secret options not shown on the presentation screen for speaker notes, so the days of making speeches with note cards are over.

Using this program to create presentations is a common asset in the business world, and the quality of a presentation is enhanced by using PowerPoint for all your slideshow needs.

I have been hanging in stores looking to buy a laptop recently and I was shocked to hear the upsell as other buys said does it come with office to which the answer was yes for an extra $$$$ It makes me bad because even as a professional I have been using openoffice for years with no problems- does more than office e.g. you can create pdf's from your files directly and costs nada, nothing zilch!
