At Fallujah
73Before the (*) First Battle of Fallujah that History now records...Some Marines...And Some Airborne...showed up to give it their ALL!
Leroy Sandoval Jr....was one of those Marines...At Fallujah:
"All Gave Some...Some Gave ALL !" (As the Military saying goes...)
___________________________________________________________
At Fallujah we came,
Now nothing will be the same.
We rode into town to relief the Army,
“No Better Friend-No Worse Enemy.”
Per “The Professionals’”; That is our Mantra,
We have come to OIF II to alleviate a cancer.
Putting ourselves now in harm’s way,
Unload your gear, Boys…We are here to stay!
At F.O.B. Volturno A.K.A. 82nd Airborne’s “Camp Dreamland”,
We will give all the insurgents the boot, and all the locals a hand.
We patrol it starting tomorrow,
The streets are wide-the alleys narrow.
We will sweep the South East heavy,
With members of Weapons on top each HumVee.
We won’t shoot, but we will lock and load,
If no one makes a false move, not even a desert toad.
Yet woe to him or her or even a mouse,
That points a gun at as from inside a house.
We will be on you like you’ve never seen,
Courtesy of this U.S. Marine!
And look around…some will be wounded or worst,
Yet, not if I can stop the bullet first!
For call of duty or just born this way,
You can bet this Marine will help save the day!

So, now we go to get it started,
The daylights burning; All units departed.
At point and in Command,
We roll out across the sand.
My M240G is oiled and ready,
My eye is sharp, my nerves are steady.
Moving on in now, to the suburb of al-Askari, in the city,
Whoever would try something foolish…I would surely pity.
Then…line them up right in my crosshairs,
Slowing down now…around known I.E.D. locations, planted as snares.
WE are in…and covering ground,
No hostiles have yet to be found.
A radio call goes out from a few streets back,
A patrol squad from Fox Co. has come under attack.
We veer left…to give more firepower on their right flank.
But then…the barricaded shooter was taken out by a tank.
Now turning north, and going even deeper in,
The Marines are here…and Mightier than we’ve ever been.

Looks like we just entered the Iraqi War,
The Fighting 2/1, of Gaudalcanal fame before.
As Marines in the past and those to come,
We showed up to “Get Us Some”!
Nothing matters now but our own “True Grit”,
An F.Y.I. for you: “Machine Gun bullets hurt when they hit”.
We will keep on coming, a warning has gone out, “You can’t escape and you can’t hide”,
Marines will keep on restoring order; Searching house-to-house for insurgents, city-wide.
Fallujah…Your “guerrilla-style” fighting days are finished…It’s time for them to cease,
A new sheriff has ridden into town; The Marine Corp’s here to enforce some peace.
So, pack up now before another bullet is fired,
Don’t bother running-you’ll only die tired!
But, if you insist on staying…and fighting awhile,
Then…this one’s for you, “Look into the muzzle and smile!”

If only the reporters around us, that are embedded, would really tell all of the news...
I’m tired of them “freaking-out”, and telling only one side, with hateful U.S. views.
If I could make one statement to just one of them...as a U.S.M.C. rep...
I would clear up some misconceptions to show how much our media is out of step.
Then…I would say that, “I fight for God and Country and the Corp...
You can leave all your politics and cameras…There…at the door.
This country has been in major turmoil…for many years...
So, don’t give me any of your B.S. about U.S. World “Take-Over” fears.
The Battles waged-There’s people dying,
We have a job to do-My Mother is already crying.
And you want to sit here…and ask question’s like…Why I came?
Hey…I didn’t start this one…Go ask Saddam Hussein!
Be it known this day, Mr. T.V. Media Star: At Fallujah we came with all our might,
I have signed on to be a Marine, Sir…and Marines have…on the right occasion…
…Been Known to FIGHT!"

(*) The First Battle of Fallujah: As part of the occupation of Iraq, the First Battle of Fallujah, codenamed Operation Vigilant Resolve, was an attempt by the United States Military to capture the city of Fallujah in April 2004. In early March 2004, the city began to fall under the increasing influence of guerrilla factions. The rising violence against the American presence resulted in the complete withdrawal of troops from the city, with only occasional incursions trying to gain and reinforce a "foothold in the city" being attempted. This was coupled with one or two patrols around the outer limits of FOB Volturno, [Camp Dreamland-Once a Baathist resort in Iraq,] the former site of Qusay and Uday Hussein's palace. Thank You for serving our country. I know it is not easy to do what you must do as a soldier. You are sent to other countries to support other nations by your country, so you must go. That is not popular, but as a soldier you follow orders. I am proud of all of our soldiers. I know if our soldiers will fight for those in other countries, they will most certainly fight for us here in the US. I know that without your support many countries would would be taken over by evil dictators who would soon attack the US, so yes you must fight in other countries. You must also fight for the rights of citizens everywhere who are seriously oppressed and killed for their tries at liberation. I am so sorry to hear about your step-son. May he have a special place in the kingdom of God. He was a brave man and I am sure he saved many lives. His sacrifice like so many others should not go unnoticed.
Kebennett: Thank you for these words. This poem is solely about my brave step-son. Actually...it is done through his Marine and Naturally Optimistic personality...from his perspective...of the few days he spent in War. I tried the best I could...to bring those feelings home...
God Bless Our Troops! and the memory of their hearts' purpose.
And your son, especially.
Amen..."God Bless Our Troops!" Our absolute worst day...in the Nation that they are defending...is no where close to being far better than their best day in combat...while defending us! Humbly...It is always something to be mindful of...!
Thank you...and about Leroy...he was a brave, funny, and admirable young man.(Who is deeply missed by his family and friends) That is what I would only hope to try to convey...through this poem...for anyone to take home with them...after reading it.
I'd like to thank you for the poem. I was a marine who served with Sandaval in Al Fallujah. He was the first of my platoon to die. I wish I had known him better but he was attached to 3rd squad and I was in 1st squad, but don't think that I or any of us in Fox 2/1 3rd platoon "palerider 3" will ever forget what he did for us that day. He must have had a wonderfull family growing up to make him the man he became.
Thank you Gorporal Green: You can not imagine what your words mean. Tears swell up in my eyes while reading your comment. It is so good to hear from someone in his platoon (always). Thank you for your kind words...That man is sorely missed by all of us. Big events come and go in our lives...and he is not there. But, I don't have to tell you this...you know...and have seen the great losses. Yet...you are still with us...and that is good news! You (*) made it through the fire !?! (*) (Perhaps you're still in country or re-deployed to another hot zone-?? Please...Keep your head down...if that is the case!)
Our Leroy...had a destiny with a time...and a place. When that time arrived...he did not back down...and did exactly what he had to do...with out thinking of himself. Over the years, we have learned much of the details...that is kind of the basis to this poem...the details that we do know. I still learn more everyday...as I just did from yourself! It does my heart good to hear from you...and to know that you will not forget what he did that day (Well...he actually had a busy day that day anyways...getting his Humvee out of jamb earlier that day via machine gun "volume" dispersed in an alley way...they needed to get out of!). We are so proud of him...and miss him so very much. Respectfully...we always
honor that which Leroy was proud to do...though...of course...we would rather have him by our side. But...he would have had to be a Marine...no matter what...that was truly his calling!
Corporal...Leroy loved being a Marine! He had all his new recruit paperwork memorized before he went into boot camp...because he wanted to succeed. He rec'vd a Bronze Star for his actions. We feel like he is no less deserving of the Medal of Honor...ourselves. His rank in the field still stands...and so does his awards...at this time. No doubt...the Marine Corp holds tight to it's ways...as it should...making all medals hard to attain...because each Marine fights as one who deseves a Medal! However...that being said I would like to see him recognized further as any Dad (Step-Dad) would...! I know that...Our family considers Leroy in ranks among the greatest who have ever served our country!
I will tell my family about your comment. Thank you again for your thoughtful words. Remember...you have a Marine Family praying for you and your safety. Thank you for your service to our Nation...as well. Be very careful out and about, Marine...and do not be a stranger! (you can e-mail directly to me anytime...on my profile section here...under the picture there is a place...and let me know how you are doing.) Semper Fi...Corporal...and may God watch over you, Christopher !
Humbly...Leroy's Step-father.
Manly...A wonderful, heart wrenching Hub expressed beautifully by your sensitive writing...I have just finished a Hub paying tribute to all our courageous fallen..Your warrior step-son is another " tear that won't "....Larry
maven101: You have served...so you know. I'll be over to read that one by you. Yes... he was a courageous one... that step-son...and what a warrior! Thank you for your comments. I know that you understand...all the inferences made throughout this poem...where Leroy was "At Fallujah"...
Sadly...for all those affected by a war...each war...each battle...Now, Nothing will be the same! (Ever!) Humbly, MPM.
Thanks for sharing this! My cousin was killed in iraq for the war too. May God bless all those who are currently serving and those who have paid the ultimate!
swosugrad09: What you just said is tremendous enough...I can only agree with you! So Sorry for the loss of your brave cousin...I know your cousin will be forever missed on this planet. Myself and my family, Appreciate brave people like your cousin, who are willing to go into harm's way for us...even if it costs them their ALL. Your cousin is to be Honored! So Sorry...again to know of this...Peace be to your family! Respectfully, MPM.

Although, not a popular war at home and a difficult task of clearing out resistant insurgency lay ahead...oops...said a non-politically correct couple of words...The Marines showed up and went right into Fallujah...head on! My step-son rode in a Humvee that later would prove to be the tip of the spear at one incredibly awful enemy ambush...designed to inflict major injuries and fatalities on the U.S. It was extremely early in the Operation and it was extremely courageous of my Step-son to stay on his machine gun and provide covering fire for those around him under attack. It happened at Fallajuh! In humblest regards, MPM
